The Boston-based Galaxie 500 will perform at G

Galaxie 500, as their name might suggest, are
not from around here. Since their 1988 debut album,
Today, and the single "Tugboat," the alternative
press has been raving about the new but
sentimental sound of this Boston-based trio.
Galaxie 500 blends the psychedelic swirl of
the '60s and the corrosive garage sound of the
Velvet Underground into a melodic, hypnotic,
operatic rock style. The band is bringing that
sound to Columbia on Jan. 24 at Greenstreet's
for a WUSC benefit show.
Touring in support of their latest album, On
Fire, singer/guitarist Dean Wareham, bassist Naomi
Yang and drummer Damon Krukowski are
not naive to the perils of being on the road. The
band has just completed a highly successful
European tour stopping in Britain, Germany,
Switzerland and Holland.
The band's simplistic sound is an iconoclast
to the beiiet tnat music must he sniocKy to be
moving. The band shows an affinity to the repetitive
and simply structured songs of the Velvet
Underground, but it doesn't stop there.
Although their limited chord use and garage
sound are progeny to the V.U., Dean's vocals

resemble a high adolescent wail far different
from Lou Reed's aggravated delivery.
Although the influence of the V.U. is seen
immediately, the band is not a V.U. clone. Each
song has an opiate atmosphere that brings images
of snow falling in a grassy field. Damon's
gentle, unobtrusive drums and Naomi's calming
bass lines provide an ethereal rhythm section
that smoothly contrasts Dean's deliberate
warbling.
Songs like "Snowstorm" and "Tell Me" are
mini-passion plays in which Dean's guitar sets
the mood for lyrics that fall into the grooves of
his voice, creating a flowing but chaotic wall of
sound.
When writing the band's lyrics, lyricist Dean
doesn't like to make the words the integral part
of the song. He asserts that he doesn't spend a
lot of time writing them and allows them to
flow from the song.
In a telephone interview last week he said,
"I'm inspired to write when we're recording.
When I'm writing the lyrics, I try to simplify
them and establish a mood. I try not to preach."
The stories in his songs often touch on the
frustration and passion of relationships.
