For some on USC's campus, Monda
was just a day of classes, new professoi
and graduate assistants, syllabi and last m

For others, however, Monday represente
just a little more. For them, it was a day c
celebration ? a day to honor a man wh
sacrificed his life for racial justice i
America. A man who preached non
violence during a time of utter chaos. Fc
others, Monday was a celebration of th
birth of civil rights activist, minister an

"The cancellation of classes was an administrative
decision that was made that the
administration felt was appropriate. We just
have to accept that," said Augustus Rodgers,
president of the Black Faculty and
Professional Staff Association.
With the celebration of King's birthday,
or the rememberance of any great civil
rights leader, often there is a greater reflection
on the racial state of the nation and in
particular here on USC's campus.
"I think that USC is a reflection of our
society overall. If you look across our campus,
you see an increase in racial tension.
