Horn on the Fourth of July
Motion Picture Soundtrack Album
MCA Records
? A soundtrack album of a film
sft during the Vietnam era is likely
to inspire nostalgia,
jt The period was musically one of
the most diverse in music history.
It was the height of the Motown
era, the last hurrah of symphonic
waltzes and the birth of the folk/
protest movement.
! The music on the Born on the
Fourth of July soundtrack provides
a good representation of this
diversity, but is sadly lacking both
in the quality of its performances
and in the skill with which the token
pieces from each genre were
selected.
The first side of the album is
composed of songs from the period,
the most familiar being The
Temptations "My Girl," a classic

song's use on the soundtrack is
that the master recording used was
not taken care of, and the resulting
distortion is distracting. The song
itself is ?till great, which makes it
eSsy to forget that it sounds
horrible.
Don McLean's "American Pie,"
is torturously long in its entirety,
taking what seems like days to get
through to the familiar chorus,
"Bye Bye Miss American Pie."

The Shirelles' "Soldier Boy" is
fine the first few times through,
but starts to sound dated quickly
after that. Frankie Avalon's
"Venus" suffers from a similar
fate. tut
The Henry Mancini antique arj
"Moon River" sounds just plain the
sappy, even in the context of the coi
film's story-line.
The only recording that seems to ^
come out intact is Van Morrison's
"Brown Eyed Girl," which is still sejr
catchy some twenty years later. ^ !
The soundtrack's most appalling
crime is the remaking of a classic, so
Credence Clearwater Revival's ^u"Born
on the Bayou." The little- ^or
known band The Broken Homes
does to the track something similar no
to what the Police did to "Don't |>e
Stand So Close to Me." The raw ^
power of the tune is buried under p0
rolling guitar and synthesizer do
smoothness. The lead singer's roc
voice is more suited to heavy Yc
metal than to a classic CCR song. thr

I and the New Bohemians, the
ick loses little of its timeliness or
idition. One has to wonder
Dugh, why the album's producers
dn't just use the original
:ording.
Side Two is a typical epic orchtral
film score. Flurrying flutes,
reeching violins, pounding
urns, all used to re-create the
oods of the film's different
snes, from haunting to joyful.
This portion of the album is acilly
quite good. Not extraordinr,
but good. It is probably one of
; better orchestral scores re
rded in several years.
Perhaps the most puzzling thing
Dut the entire album is the ablce
of the familiar "For What
> Worth" by Buffalo Springfield,
ich the Film's commercials use
liberally. If you were going to
y the album for the classic track,
get it. It's not there.
If you want to buy into Vietnam
stalgia, you would probabl) be
tter off buying the individual
igles rather than the Born on the
urth of July soundtrack. But it j
es combine some decent vintage
;k and a great orchestral score.

Bjorn Borg went to court Tuesday
to face an $82 million business
lawsuit in the first of five cases the
former tennis star has scheduled
j for this year.
, Borg's other cases involve three
r libel actions and a custody battle
i with the mother of his 4-year-old
1 son, Robin, the Swedish news
agency TT said.
The multimillion dollar lawsuit
; was brought by Lars Skarke,
Borg's former partner and managing
director of the Bjorn Borg Design
Group, a fashion business that
went bankrupt last summer. Skarke
claims Borg violated a shareholder
agreement.
"Borg denies all allegations. If

great damage through managing
it miserably," Borg's lawyer,
Henning Sjostrom, told TT.
Next week Borg is bringing a
$600,000 lawsuit against the
monthly magazine Z for publishing
allegations that he used cocaine by
ex-girlfriend Jannike Bjorling,
whom Borg is fighting over custory
of his son.
Borg also sued Z for selling T- ,
shirts with the text "Bjorn Borg
Collection" ? an allusion to his
fashion empire ? with portraits of
Ms. Bjorling, former wife Mariana
and his current wife Loredana.
r_ He also has sued a gossip
weekly for alleging that his relationship
has broken up with the
ie Italian rock singer whom he mar!_
ried in September. Mrs. Borg has
sued a Swedish magazine for pub'S
