Stone's lai By DAVID BOWDEN Staff Writer Born on the Fourth of July is, simply put, a disappointment. Oliver Stone's latest movie is so depressing that it is almost unbearable to watch. As a director, Stone likes to show the darkness and dirt oi me. uniortunately, he was too successful. The movie is the story of reallife Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic, played by Tom Cruise, who does an excellent job showing the transformation of Kovic from an idealistic patriot to a crippled, bitter man. However, this transformation takes place over two and a half hours. The movie is too long, especially since the subject matter is so horrific. Children are shown mangled and dismembered. Cruise's character is shot in the spine and paralyzed. He recuperates in a ratinfested hospital where he has to lie in his own filth. Kovic then comes home and becomes alienated from his family and friends, at one point having a five-minute shouting match with his mother. 'T3o uv^auij ci By The Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) ?
