the lack of elf labor union representation,
he had a reason to be a
little grumpy. I guess I was wrong
to think elves were merry folk
with good job security and no
work-related stress.
With that settled, I went about
putting together my iirst Mutant
Ninja Guava Mellon, the first of
thousands I was going to assemble
during the elf fourteen-hour work
days. The job soon got tedious,
and I got cranky.
The short, balding elf with the
bad attitude and Napoleon complex
told me his name was Blinky.
I couldn't help but ask where
Sneazy, Dopey and Doc lived. Unfortunately,
he didn't take the joke
too kindly, and I soon found myself
working the stable.
Inside the stable, I met Dancer,
Prancer, Comet, Cupid, Donner,
Dasher, Blitzen, who, by the way,
is the only German reindeer, and
the rest of the gang. Of course, I
was most curious to meet "the
most famous reindeer of all."
I immediately went to the stall

was a girl! I was quickly relieved
to hear that it was only
Roada, Rudolph's red-nosed sister.
Rudolph was absent with a case of

Heart-broken that I would never

That night after the battle with

workaholic elves, sunburn on my
nose from the lack of Ozone and
no Rudolph, I decided I was going
to give Santa my resignation. I

he knew when I was awake. He
said he knew if I was bad or good.
He said he knew there wasn't a
flight for a month. I was shattered.
He just kept Ho-hoing louder and
more intensely, and I wondered
why. Then, just then, I made an
astute observation; when Santa
laughed, his belly ... it shook
like ... like ... ah a bowl full of
jelly! Right then, as if he could
read my mind, he laughed so hard
he tipped the chair back too far
and fell. Yet he never missed a
Ho-ho, and he continued laughing
merrily and pounding his hand on
the eround.
Santa then told me that when
Prancer was done with his training
the next day he would give me a
lift to Atlanta where I could catch
a connecting flight. I smiled and
hugged the big guy. Then I
tweaked his big rosy cheeks. He
continued to Ho-ho, but he stopped
for a minute and said, "I always
know what people want for Christ- *
mas." Yet I was puzzled, because I
really wanted a Mazda Miata.
Bonehead, Yeah you GEEK! Just
wanted to say Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year. Also had to remind
you that I want the $5 you still owe me.

slipping from his lap into
Daddy's arms. Daddy carried her
as they walked from Toyland, but
Jessamine looked back at Santa,
sitting in his big chair, and the
kids getting in his lap.
She put the sucker Santa had given
her in her mouth as she gazed
wide-eyed at the Christmas decora
tions and gifts among the
merchandise.
Daddy knew a restaurant in the
area, where they want to eat.
"What did you like most about
coming to Richmond?" Mommy
asked.
"I liked seeing Santa Clause,"
Jessamine answered predictably.
"And I liked the star on his tree.
"Do you think Santa will really
give me what I asked for, Daddy?"
Jessamine asked, turning to her
father. Dad brushed his hair from
his forehead.
"Why, I'm sure he'll do everything
he can," her dad answered.
"That is, if I have anything to do
about it"
To suit the spirit of the season,
the family ordered turkey and
dressing and all the trimmings, including
pumpkin pie.
Soon they were back at the train
station, where Jessamine stared at
the ornamentation and the crowds.
Before long, Mommy led her to
the train, where they boarded and
sat, looking at the lights of the
city. As the train crossed the
swiftly flowing James River, Jessamine
glimpsed a large bright tree
with a star blazing on top.

Pressing herself back into the
seat, she told Dolly, "I want to live
here some day."
And so, years later, Jessamine
did, in a house in the far West
End. But I guess you know what
she did at Christmas. No, she
didn't take her children to Thai
hcimcr's downtown and ride them
on the escalator to tell their Christmas
wishes to Santa. Nor did she
show them the decorations and the
lights in the center of the city.
But she did take them to the Regency
Mall and ride them on the
escalator at Toyland ? little Lisa
and Brent. One after the other
climbed into Santa's lap and told
him what they wanted for Christmas
? Barbie and a toy kitchen
for Lisa and Transformers and
Nintendo for Brent.
Then Jessamine went home and
told Brent Sr. (again) about that
time when Mom and Dad and Dorothy
brought her to Richmond to
see Santa Claus and to buy Dorothy
a dress. She told him about

said she'd come back and she was
glad she did. Then she called Mom
and Dad and Dorothy separately
and invited the family to come to
Richmond for Christmas. They'd
have a good time and go to Thalheimer's
to see Santa Claus.
And on Christmas Day it was

Carolina with her menagerie. The
