She was alone, but she had
friends.
Larry often stopped by offering
to trade her scraps of food for aluminum
cans, so she collected them
for him. He said he could get money
for them, but she couldn't
understand why he wanted money.
She found sufficient food in the
trash cans behind the nightclubs
and fast food places nearby. She
could always go to the mission for
clothes. Her name was even on the
waiting list for a winter coat.
Her other friend was Pat. She
only saw Pat at night Sometimes
Pat gave Gerty food, but she had
to keeD it a secret or Pat's boss
would get angry.
Every night Pat went away with
men on business. A month ago Pat
went out with a new guy and
didn't come back for a few nights.
When she did return, she told
Gerty that she got busted, and her
boss found out and beat her up.
Gerty didn't have any other
friends. Of course it had only been
eight months since she left the
hospital. She walked out the door,
right past the doctors and nurses,
and they didn't even notice. She
wouldn't let them put her away.
That was in May. Now it was
December.
She had always been with the
family at this time of year, even
after they put her in the hospital
when the voices started talking to
her. This year she didn't have mo

ney to buy gifts or cards, but Larry
told her that the mission had a
Christmas dinner he would take
her to.
On Christmas Eve, Gerty decided
to decorate the alley where
she lived, behind the Speak Easy.
She looked everywhere for a cedar
tree, but couldn't find one in any
of the alleys nearby, so she just
broke a branch off of one of the
trees set in the sidewalk. She took
it back to the alley and propped it
up in a coffee can.
She wound tape from a broken
cassette around the tree and then
broke some pieces apart to use it
for icicles. She also found some
tinfoil and crunched it into balls
and propped them on the limbs.
When she found bits of tinsel and
broken ornaments, she placed them
on the front limbs for everyone to
see.
Finally, she sculpted a rough
star out of the leftover foil and in"OMESEE

vited Pat and Larry over to watch
the tree-crowning ceremony. She
hoped for snow to complete the
scenario.
Before retiring, Gerty went on a
scavenger hunt for gifts to give to
Pat and Larry. She rattled her cart
down every alley. For Pat, she decided
on a kitten that she found
abandoned behind Burger King.
She made a special trip to the mission
and picked out a tattered red
scarf for Larry. She placed the kitten
in a box, punched holes in the
ton. and tied it with a niftr.p. of hlnp.
cloth. She wrapped Larry's scarf in
the comic section of yesterday's
paper and tied it with a string. After
she wrote their names on the
packages with a broken pencil, she
set the presents under the tree.
Gerty snuggled inside an overturned
box and drifted into sleep.
She slept soundly that night She
dreamed of crystal snowflakes
lighting on her check. She could
almost feel the brisk wind in
which the flakes danced before
her.
She hugged herself in the dark
corner of the alley beneath the
cardboard roof as she sank deeper
and deeper into troubleless sleep.
Pat decided to join Larry and
Gerty for Christmas dinner. She
caught up with Larry on his way to
the alley where Gerty stayed. TTtey
