Defense and effort were the
story as the USC basketball team
opened its regular season Wednesday
night with a 76-54 victory
over the Eagles of Winthrop.

the Frank McGuire Arena for the
contest.
The Gamecocks controlled the
tip-off and then ran up an early
12-0 lead before the Eagles came
back. Led by George Henson's
outside shooting and the indsiue
play of Shaun Wise, Winthrop
fought back to make it 16-16.
Before the comeback, USC head
coach George Felton had substituted
in five new players, the majority
of them freshman or first'
year players.
Guard Barry Manning, who did
not start the game because he
"broke a team rule," came in to
lead the Gamecocks to a 35-26 advantage
with just more than two
minutes left to play in the first
half.
When Bojan Popovic hit a jumper
then stole a pass and converted
an easy lay-up, it was 39-26. USC
connected on three free throws to
end the half leading, 42-26.
Felton commented on the excellent
plav of the defense.
"Offensively, I thought we did
some good things there, but it was
the defense," Felton said. "We
played hard, and I thought they got
after Wirithrop. To me that is a
good sign because defense will
keep you in games.
"I wanted to see how we were
going to play defensively. We're a
young team. I expect probably
more mistakes from an offensive
standpoint than I do a defensive
standpoint"
The USC defense held Winthrop
to only 29 percent shooting from
the field in the first half while the
Gamecock offense shot 56 percent
in the period.

sparked the Gamecocks and excited
the fans when he slammed a
rebound in to open the second half
scoring.
USC opened up a 20-point lead
with 15:17 left to play and controlled
the game until the end, allowing
Winthrop to get no closer M
than 18 points. USC faltered near
the end of the contest from the
foul line, but still managed the
22-point victory.
USC's defense held the Eagles jj
to another poor shooting half, and
Winthrop shot only 29 percent k
from the field for the game. USC *
shot only 45 percent from the free- gg
throw line in the second half, but
shot 55 percent from the floor for
the game.
"Overall, I was pleased with the
entire performance," Felton said.
"We'll look at the films. There's
always some area you can improve
upon, such as free throws at the ^
end of the game."
Felton was very impressed by
the team's effort in the match. d
"I'm very pleased with the ef- ^
fort," he said. "As I told the kids
before the game, I was going to ci
