The USC soccer team has advanced
to the quarterfinals of the
NCAA Soccer Tournament with
a 5-1 victory over Wake Forest
Sunday at Polo Field in WinstonSalem,
N.C.
The Gamecocks, 17-2-2,
struck early. At the 5:16 mark,
Jeff Love took a give-and-go
from Clark Brisson and hit a shot
from 12-yards out for a 1-0 lead.
Gamecock head coach Mark Berson
remarked on the importance
of the first goal. t
"By scoring the first goal, we s
established ourselves and made
them respect us. It also gave us ?
momentum," Berson said. j
The momentum carried USC j
to its second goal when freshman t
Ruben Tufino scored unassisted j
at the 18:02 mark. The score re- (
mained 2-0 in favor of USC at \
halftime. s
Wake Forest got its only goal J
late in the game. At the 71:17
mark, Gerraint Davies, who
scored against USC in the Dea- <
cons' victory earlier this season, t
headed the ball in on a cross to 1
cut the Gamecock lead to 2-1. I

The Gamecocks exhibition
match against the Estonian National
basketball team from the Soviet
Union was anything but a typical
preseason warmup.
After 45 minutes of evenly
played basketball, USC captured a
95-87 win in double overtime Saturday
at the Frank McGuire
Arena.
'To open up the exhibition season
with a double overtime game
is something else," said USC head
coach George Felton. "I thought it
really brought the team together,
and I thought we played pretty
well."
The Estonia Nationals kept a
lead for the majority of the second
half, led by 10 three-pointers in
regulation. Estonia held an eight
point edge over the Gamecocks
with just 2:56 left in regulation.
A swarming USC defense,
which caused three consecutive offensive
penalites on the Estonians
and blocked two last second shots,
brought the Gamecocks back to a
74-74 tie. f
"I thought we played some good
man-to-man defense," Felton said.
"They just shot the ball extremely
well."
It looked as though USC was
going 10 secure uie viciuiy 111 uic
first overtime as they held a threepoint
lead with just 10 seconds remaining.
But an off-balance j
21-footer by Andrus Nagel with ,
one tick left on the clock tied the
game, forcing a second overtime. 1
The Gamecocks, paced by nine E
of 11 shooting from the charity e
stripe, built an eight-point advan- t
tage in the second overtime, a lead *
they would not relinquish. c
