buzzer echoed over The Graveyard
soccer field Sunday afternoon,
USC head coach Mark Berson was
in the middle of a circle of
reporters.
His arms were crossed over his
chest as he listened to each of the
questions and answered them
slowly.
He nods a lot when he answers.
He also smiles a lot.
"Do you feel your team is overshadowed
by the USC football
team?" one reporter asks, as she
holds a microphone under his chin.
He smiles again, unfolds his
arms and places his hands on his
hip. He sort of chuckles at the
question ? a question he gets
asked a lot.
"We're competing against the
soccer teams from other schools.
We aren't competing against our
own football team. They play their
game, we play ours."

small notepad.
But you have to wonder if questions
like that ever really do get to
Berson and his team.
How does it feel to be the most
successful sports team at this university
and be dwarfed by another
sport? That must be frustrating.
Berson won't tell you that outright
because he's just a positivespirited
kind of guy, but sometimes
you can see it in his and his
team's faces.
USC soccer started as merely a
club sport before Berson blew in
from The Citadel in 1978 and
started the program that has gone
145-46-18 over 11 seasons. That's
a winning percentage of about 70
percent.

Sunday's soccer match at The
Graveyard pitted the South Reg

North Carolina.
In this match USC, 5-1, defeated
the Tar Heels in a come-frombehind
victory by a score of 3-2.
Ironically, all three Gamecock
goals were scored by North Carolina
native Clark Brisson. It was
the first hat trick of his career, and
the first for USC since Doug Allison
completed the feat in 1987.

Brisson was happy he got the
opportunity and was able to put
the ball in the the back of the net.
"I feel really good about it,"
said Brisson. "I usually get the
shots, but sometimes I don't make
them count - today I did."
Brisson's most effective weapon
in the game against the Tar Heels
was the chip shot, or lofting the
ball. In the first half, Brisson had
his first attempt, a chip shot, saved
by an outstretched Tar Heel
goalkeeper.
However, his first goal came after
he dribbled around four defenders,
turned and lofted the ball
over the goalkeeper.
Brisson had a chance to pick up
another goal when, with 25:47 left
to play, he was intentionally fouled
by the Tar Heel goalie in the penalty
box. Brisson shot the penalty
kick toward the right corner of the
net, but the North Carolina goalkeeper
made the save.
His second goal came later in
the second half and was off of
another loft, this time he was
20-yards out.
Brisson's third goal came when
Jeff Love crossed the ball, which
the Tar Heel goalkeeper couldn't
