'Stones'
rock
Raleigh
By JACK STREET
Staff Writer
This was the best case for tolerance
that South Carolina will never
hear.
"All you well-learned Protestants"
would have enjoyed listening
to musicians tapping into
enormous God-given talent. And,
though out of character, the Rolling
Stones have even been displaying
a modicum of humility ,
said"
"The greatest rock and roll band in
the world is a different band every
night."
There was no question about
that distinction in the minds of
55,000 rockers at Carter-Finley
Stadium in Raleigh on Saturday
night.
Devils, witches, frat boys, vixens
and old-timers all swayed
alike ... all desperately seeking
excitement. Order prevailed
though, especially because this
Budweiser-sponsored show was
alcohol-free. But, not smoke-free.
The once-militant Stones now
incorporate some lessons into the
show. The musicianship is a lesson
by example. The Raleigh show
was a blues survey and a rock concert
with a touch of country, funk
and psychedelia.
Melodic improvised guitar riffs
and solos by Ronnie Wood were
sparked by the solid rhythm and
blues. Mick Jagger was in fine
vocal form.
Two keyboardists, three backup
vocalists and a sax player joined
drummer Charlie Watts, bassist
Bill Wyman, Richards, Wood and
Jagger. The ballyhooed feud between
Richards and Jagger wasn't
evident in the performance. Lyrics
in the new songs are autobiographical,
though, and the schism
shows.
The Stones are ancient in years
by rock'n'roll standards. They refuse
to go away. But unlike most
of this summer's retread rock, this
roll through North America is
more than a greatest hits parade.

Although the record-breaking
cinematic summer of 1989 is now
part of movie history, the new A1
Pacino movie, Sea of Love, proves
the end of summer doesn't neces
sarily mean the end of exceptionally
good movies.
Sea of Love is an erotic, suspense
thriller directed by Harold
Becker (Taps, Vision Quest), with
Pacino (Scarface) playing Lt.
Frank Keller, a lonely New York
detective who falls in love with the
prime suspect in a murder case
he's working on.
Pacino's portrayal of Keller is a
strong and believable one, especially
in the first half of the movie,
which concentrates on the detective's
lonely life. This is important
because the audience becomes
sympathetic toward Keller ? an i
alcoholic whose wife left him for i
his partner and whose 20 years on
the police force has left him with a i
i hardened attitude toward life. !

Pacino has chemistry of a different
type with actor John Goodman
[of TV's "Roseanne"), who plays
Sherman Touhey, Keller's partner
n the murder case. The friendship
between these two characters lightens
a script that is sometimes too
ntense, and Goodman is the perfect
comic relief, especially when
le sings his rendition of the song
'Sea of Love."
The intensity of the movie grips
he audience to the point where
most of the theater iumoed in their
seats at particularly gripping moments.
However, the suspensefiil
theme music used is sometimes a
bit too much, promising dramatic
moments that sometimes don't
happen. The song "Sea of Love"
played throughout the movie, however,
is an excellent touch that
helps to unify the script.
The ending is a bit too packaged
and tidy, which takes a little bit
away from the film. The solution
to both the crime and romance is
somewhat unsatisfactory, but overall
the great acting, writing and direction
make drowning yourself in
"Sea of Love" an entertaining
experience.
