Women interested in playing soccer at USC
may soon have their own club, international studies
freshman Heidi Brooks said Monday.
Brooks is trying to start a women's soccer
club that would begin competitive play this
season.
The team would not be collegiate or intramural,
but a registered student organization.
Brooks said she believes there is enough interest
at USC to start the club. She already knows
six or seven people who are interested.
Brooks said the soccer team would need 11
players in addition to substitutes in order to
play in games.
"I think it's unfortunate we don't have a women's
soccer team because I know there is a lot
of interest, and they have girls almost every
year try out for the guys' soccer team," Brooks
said.
Women have tried out for the USC soccer
team, soccer coach Mark Berson said, but have
never made the team. For this reason, he said

clubs or intramurals are a good alternative.
Clubs are different from intramurals because
they play other schools and other teams not affiliated
with USC, said Allyson Jones, director
of Fitness and Sports Clubs. USC's team would
play other clubs such as the womens' club at
Clemson
But before that can happen, the club must
have 10 full-time fee-paying students to be recognized
by USC, said Rob Sandruck, a graduate
assistant working in Student Life department.
Full-time undergraduates must be taking at least
12 hours. Graduate students must be enrolled
tor at least nine nours.
Other requirements for forming a club are
filling out an application stating the purpose of
the organization. Clubs must have an adviser
who is a full-time faculty member. Finally, it
must write a constitution and submit the application
for approval.
Sandruck said most organizations that meet
requirements are approved, unless their purpose
is illegal. There are about 240 student clubs on
campus, Sandruck said. .

Eighteen of these clubs are sports clubs,
Jones said.
Sandruck said new clubs at USC are being
started all the time. One person a day usually
comes into Student Life with intentions of starting
a club, some of which are successful, Sandruck
said.
Funding for the club is not available until the
club has been a recognized club for one year.
Brooks said money would be raised through
fund-raisers or membership dues for the First
year.
Brooks said anyone interested in playing
should join, even if they are beginners. The
club must provide equal oppurtunity despite
race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age,
disability or veteran status.
The Office of Campus Recreation assists
sports clubs and advises them, Jones said. Each
club elects officers and has a representative for
the Sports Club Council, a student-run organization.
Jones said the council is supposed to
bring sports clubs together in talking about new
ideas and budgets, among other things.
