Play opens with
excellent cast

Rainmaker opened Friday
to a very receptive audience of well-dressed
people.
Directed by David Avin and produced by
Jenny Howard, The Rainmaker is a love story
set in the late 1800s to early 1900s in the Midwest.
The play centers around the motherless
Curry family who are suffering from a current
hard-hitting drought ? not enough water tc
keep their cattle fed and not enough men tc
marry off their only daughter, Lizzie.
Suddenly, in steps a handsome man who
claims to have the ability to make it rain
and . . . well, you can probably get the point.
David Avin's direction is great. When the
work of a director is non-existent, and the characters
and actors themselves appear to shine
only by their own good graces, that is when direction
is perfect. Clever staging is where the
good director leaves his mark and, without giving
anything away, there is some quite clevei
staging in The Rainmaker.
The scriptwriting does not suffer at all from
the slightly mundane story line. Nash's humoi
and sense of beauty are light and nice, and his
dialogues are natural and smooth. Combine this
with a strong cast and voila! a good productior
