Pressure placet
not to lose at V
With the emergence of new
USC head coach Sparky Woods,
many people have begun to look
toward tne tuture ratner tftan continue
to dwell on the tragic death
of the late Joe Morrison.
Granted, seven months have
passed, and a new season is underway,
but one person won't allow
the situations surrounding his
death be forgotten.
She is JaVena Morrison, widow
of the late coach.
J. V., as she is called, is trying
to bring a case against the university,
saying that her husband's
death was stress-related. If her
point is proven in court, she is
likely to receive a healthy sum of
money.
This may sound sinful to some
of you, but I believe she has a
viable case. I?m not implying that I
agree with the way in which she is
handling the case, but her husband's
death definitely involved a
great deal of stress.
A lot of people argue that any
Division I coaching job is accompanied
with an immense pressure
to win, but I think it is magnified
at USC. Besides Morrison, I can
name three other coaches, two in
football and one in basketball, that

Paul Dietzel is case number one.
He arrived as head football coach

in i?oo aiier winning a national
championship at LSU. Dietzel proceeded
to go 1-9 that first year, but ?
Gamecock fans still had hope. In
the nine years Dietzel was at the
helm, he compiled a 42-53 record,
with one bowl appearance; not the
caliber of performance you'd expect
from a man who once
coached a national championship
team.
Following the removal of Dietzel,
Jim Carlen stepped in as coach
in 1975. During his seven year
stint at the helm, Carlen took the
Gamecocks to three bowl games,
recruited a Heisman Trophy winner
in George Rogers (1980) and
compiled a record of 45-36. The
problem with Carlen, in Gamecock
Club members' eyes, was that he
was too "free-spirited." He was
known to have more than one woman
at his side, and Gamecock
supporters ? in particular the
Silver Spurs ? pressured administration
for his removal.

A lack of discipline, particularly
on defense, is what USC head
coach Sparky Woods sees as the
biggest problem facing the
Gamecocks.
Bi trunk tne biggest improvement
we've got to make is we've
got to become more of a disciplined
football team, especially on
defense," Woods said at his
weekly press conference Mortday.
"The fact that we, at times, leave
our assignments a little bit, and
kind of do our own things at times.
We're not working very good as a
team. We've got to be more cohesive
as a team."
USC travels to Morgantown,
"ile photo W.V., this weekend to face the
ekly press 12th-ranked Mountaineers of West
Virginia. West Virginia is 2-0 and
~j coming off a 14-10 victory over
Maryland.
Pvs The Gamecocks, 1-0-1, battled
3 1 to a 17-17 tie against Virginia
3 2 Tech this past weekend and will be
3 3 playing in their first road game of
3 4 the season.
3 5 One of the big questions facing
1 S USC is how the defense will stop
3 10 Mountaineer star quarterback Ma5
9 jor Harris. This past season Harris
5 7 led West Virginia to the national
11 championship game against Notre
14 Dame, completing 105-186 passes
17 for 1,915 yards with 14 touch13
downs and eight interceptions on
23 the year. This past week against
? Maryland, Harris was 11-19 for
19 150 yards, with one interception,
? and he carried the ball 14 times for
22 64 yards.

fense after last week's
performance.
"We had three or four plays
come out of that huddle that I had
never seen before," Nehlen said.
"You think I'm kidding you, but
I'm not. I wish I was. It's just unbelievable.
We had things happen
to us I just couldn't believe."
Woods realizes, though, that the
unpredictability of Harris and the
West Virginia offense can be one
of their strengths.
"Coach Nehlen was talking about
some of those plays that came
out of the huddle he'd never seen.
You'll see that a lot with Major
Harris," Woods said. "He'll turn a
bad one (play) into a real good one
in a.hurry, and most of them he'd
never seen end up making a bunch
of yards or a touchdown. He's
probably the best when things
aren't going good.
Woods said correcting the problems
on defense will be the key to
beating West Virginia.
"I think that if we go back and
play good sound defense, tackle
well, and take care of our responsibilities
first, then that will give us
the best chance to win the ball
game," Woods said.
From the other perspective,
Nehlen said that the USC running
game will be the main concern for
the Mountaineers.
"They can run like the devil,"
Nehlen said. "It's very obvious
they've got great skill.
"They're a fine, fine team.
They're every bit as good as we
are. We haven't done hardly anything
right yet."
The kickoff for Saturday's game
at Mountaineer Field is scheduled
for 1 p.m.
