Program to
leaders, fre
. By KATHY HEBERGER
Staff Writer
Freshmen must meet this Friday's
application deadline if they
want to be in the Emerging Leaders
Program this fall, but anyone
who wants leadership advice can
go to the Leadership Training Lab
and Viewing Room throughout the
year.
The Emerging Leaders Program,
ODen to the first 50 freshmen who
apply, is a six-week series of clas- <
ses with topics such as "building a j
team" and "managing ^committees <
and meetings." )
This year's emerging leaders j
will have mentors, upperclassmen
leaders they can talk to and "get ,
the scoop on things from some stu- (
dents who've been there," Assis- l
tant Dean of Student Life Novella .
Fortner said.
The program also gives freshmen
leaders a chance to meet other
freshmen who will most likely be
leaders for the next four years, she
said.
"It was definitely worth the
- time," sophomore Devin Beaver,
an Emerging Leader last year, said.
"You meet so many friends who
. will be leaders. You know who
they are, and you know you can
turn to them when you need
. them."
Fortner adds that these ties between
student leaders can lead tn a
smooth running school in a few
years. "You meet people who will
be leaders with you. You get to
know each other so that you can
utilize each other's organizations
when you need to."

All majors and all individuals,
Fortner said, can benefit from the
program. "We all have individual
skills that this program can refine.
You don't have to run for student
body president if you don't want
to," she said.
"You don't have to be a freshnan
to get help from us. There's a
")lace for evervone in leadership
levelopment," she said.
Everyone can use the Leadership
Lab, located in Room 001 of
he Campus Activities Center. A
staff works 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
VIonday through Friday to help
matrons find what they need.
The lab is a mini-library, lined
svith volumes ranging from the Enryclopedia
of Ice Breakers to Ethcs
(and Other Liabilities) and also
i variety of video and audio tapes.
The lab has five file cabinets
full of pamphlets and handouts about
everything from budgeting an
organization's funds to setting goals,
Former said.
Carolina Cares adviser Tamara
Bowden says she used the Leadership
Program's services to organize
this week's Carolina Cares
meeting.
"Last night we had a speaker
come to talk about budgeting. The
Leadership Program's services are
great. Last year we needed help
with our public relations, and they
sent a speaker who gave us some
tips on how to be better," Bowden
said. "They also have a very good

use when we're selecting our philanthropy
project each year."
