est freshmen back to Hometown, USA.
Cruising smoothly onto campus and into
living isn't always easy, but successfully se
that first year is rewarding.
"This place is your second home, and
inenas makes a ainerence. it s nara to get a l
of college if your dorm life isn't good," Bak
dence Adviser Bonita Hawkins said. "Fitting
your environment is the key to college."
Lisa Zucker, director of USC's Health and \
Department, agrees.
"I can't say college life is harder or more
for freshmen than it is for others, but freshmei
ally go through more changes all at once t
other classes do. For many, it's their first tii
residence hall and first time controlling thi
diets," Zucker said.

"We've just finished the trial actually
and the jury was about to turn him Bell,
loose when my brother found boss of
another girl he had raped on a col
lege campus," Bell, 20, said.
"The judge allowed us to bring
in the new witness. I just got a
script where I tell the college officials
that if thev'd listened to her I
wouldn't have been raped."
The trial ended last week with
his conviction on a charge of rape.
Bell went to the Los Angeles
Commission on Violence Against
Women and treatment centers,
where she talked to rape victims
and counselors.
"This is a good story to do in
the summer when a lot of students
are home," Bell said. "The people
I talked to said the incidence of
date rape on college campuses is
going up and up. I was just on a
personal appearance in Oklahoma
where two women told me they
had friends who reported rapes after
seeing our show."
She said the boyfriend in the
show gave little indication that he
would attack her.
"He was the handsome AllAmerican
boy," she said. "He was
always looking after me. You'd
never suspect. The only sign was
that he was a touchy-feely kind of
person.
"We've stressed that you should
learn about a person. And when
you go on a date set your limits
right away. We've tried to make it
realistic so girls will know what to
expect if it should happen to
them."

Amsterdam; here everything is
concentrated," he said. "I also enjoy
the interaction between professors
and students here. It's not just
a professor talking at you. You
learn what they require you to
learn and you really learn it"
When they're not in class or doing
homework, they head for the
tennis courts, the pool and the tube
just as other USC students do.
Menon listens to Pink Floyd,
van den Brekel plays tennis and
Kim watches TV.
"My favorite TV show? Let's
see. It comes on at 7 o'clock.
'Cosby.' That's it. I watch it because
it's on at a good time for
me. I'm at home with no classes at
that time," Kim said.
And French graduate student
Caroline Carfantan, who is taking
classes in German, English and
foreign trade has discovered The
Patio. "It's great. You can keep
going back for salad, and you
don't have to pay extra," she said.
Natalie Leveel, an International
Relations student, arrived two
weeks ago and doesn't have much
spare time yet. "I've had so much
paper work with my registration, it
seems that's all I've done so far,"
she said.
Kim hopes to come back to Columbia
for a job after he earns his
degree, and Yutthichai Chanikornpradit
of Thailand, an undergradu
ate electrical and computer engineering
major, wants to work for a
couple of years after college. "I
want to get some experience," He
said.
The internationals' stay here
will also be a good experience for
the American students at USC, according
to Aluri. "They'll meet
people from other countries that
they otherwise would never meet,"
he said.
