A coup
Getting C. Everett Koop to USC
would be great for university
If USC can persuade C. Everett Koop to accept a position at the
School of Public Health, that would be one of the biggest coudj
vw - M. ~
this university will ever score.
Koop, arguably the most influential surgeon general to ever pui
on the uniform, retired from his post this past year, and there are
rumors he may be wooed to USC. Nobody is saying much, bul
there is an undercurrent of optimism.
The rumors are getting so strong, they have even made the national
news.
Right now, no one is sure what's going to happen, but one-thing
is sure: if Koop does decide to come here, the whole academic
world will be jealous.
The Pope, Billy Graham, Jehan Sadat, Lyn Nofzinger, Henry
Kissinger ? these were all fantastic for the university for recognition
of academics, but these were also basically one-time things.
If Koop becomes part of the USC staff, that would be permanent
and every student, professor, administrator and staff member
can boast around the country that the former surgeon general
works on our campus.
One would hope negotiations are on-going, but if they are not,
they should be. Koop is an historical figure. If USC can get him
on staff, it would enhance the 2001 image more than anything
else.

A quick drive by the commuter parking lot at the corner of
Pickens and Pendleton streets this week will fully illustrate why
half that lot should have never been taken away from the students.
Before this year, the lot was reserved for commuter students
only. But this summer, while the students were away making money
to pay their tuition, the powers that be decided the faculty
didn't have enough parking and the commuter lot would fill the
need nicely.
They decided to take the entire lot away from students, but they
didn't quite accomplish that.
S.G. President Marie-Louise Ramsdale fought to get back half
the lot as a compromise.
Half for students, half for faculty ? that's fair,
f But, if you drove by the lot Monday or Tuesday the half that
was supposed to be filled by the overcrowded faculty was virtually
barren. Some 59 spaces were left open around 11 a.m. The
students' half was packed to capacity.
Either the faculty decided not to come to work during the first
days of classes, or there was never a need for that additional
space. Guess which one it is.
There is a travesty afoot.
If the lot remains empty for the rest of the week, that would
prove there is no need for additional faculty parking. And if there

so give it back.
Students can sympathize with the needs of the faculty in most
cases, but when a student has been driving around the block for an
hour looking for a place to park and sees the same spot he parked
in last year left open, the sympathy level starts to decline rapidly.
There is little enough parking near classroom buildings for students
as it is now without this blatant non-use of space.
The faculty obviously has enough room, or they aren't working
this week. Either way, something is wrong.

They have fragile hearts and one exciting Todd

What price would the average student pay for

the inside of the coliseum during concert nights
or basketball games?
What price would the average student pay to

What price would the average student pay to

The entitlement of having physical accessibility

would show that USC is a university on the cu
ting edge.
? USC should stop playing the "2001" theme
? also known as "Also Sprach Zaruthrustra"
? because, in the first scene of 2001 ?A
Space Odyssey, there is a naked ape, which
might promote thoughts of bestiality and lascivious
behavior.
? We should kick all these international students
back to where they came from. This is
America, you know.
? We should kick all these non-South Carolinians
out of the university. This is the University
of South Carolina, dam it.
? USC should apologize to Moral Majority foi
installing condoms in cigarette machines on
campus a few years back.
? Barbed wire fences should be put around th<
women's quad and Patterson and South Tower,
as well as Capstone. A Delta Force Strike team
should be sent into Columbia Hall, NADA and
Bates West, the coed apartment areas on campus,
to rescue the female students from the hordes
of ultra-hormonal males roving the halls
with vicious leers on their faces and awful
thoughts in their minds.
? A memorial should be placed in the Roost tc
replace that silly, stupid Heisman Memorial for
George Rogers. The new one should commemorate
Mike Fair's prestigious football career
with the San Diego Chargers, which lasted a
whole week, I think.
? The USC Bookstore should stop selling sucl
essibility on-j
a good long time to get in if you can't open th
door yourself. Many students take for grante
that they can simply open the heavy steel door
at Gambrell and other buildings and walk in. t
good many USC students don't share tha
privilege.
In addition, accessibility is the law (S.C. Bil
of Rights for the Handicapped and the S.C
Barrier-Free Design Code) ? obviously am
unfortunately, not a very well-enforced law. Al
public buildings (e.g. university classroon
buildings) must be made physically accessibli
to students who are able-bodied, as well a
those with disabilities. Heavy steel doors are \
direct violation of that law because they preven
access to a good many students witl
disabilities.
More importantly, basic physical access t<
buildings is a human right. Why, when issues o
accessibility have been addressed for the pas
several years at this university (Students for Ac
cessibility 1986,1987; Aware 1988), has th<
university continued to build buildings, such a:
Swearingen Engineering, without electric
doors?

Bakker, and some people may think the university
promotes having sex in hotels with drugged
secretaries who will eventually get breast enlargements,
and ? correct me if I'm wrong ?
I don't think the university does.
? USC should have a year-long celebration,
much like the Ecumenical Year of the Arts,
celebrating people who think like Mike Fair ?
r "USC, The Year of Intolerance," which will include
speeches by noted intolerants: Sen. Jesse
Helms of North Carolina, who still thinks the
5 Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is a communist; the
Rev. Ian Paisley, the renowned bigot from
Northern Ireland who thinks the gentlest man in
the universe, Pope John Paul II, is the Antichrist;
and the Rev. Jerry Falwell. He can visit
USC for two days ? as a kind of culmination,
like the pope and Robbie Benson in the aforementioned
years ? to lecture on topics as diverse
as why bookburning isn't censorship; why
> Batman and other superheroes are demoninspired
works of sin; and why Ollie North is
the reincarnation of Jesus Christ and George
Washington.

it The cost of accessibility is forethought and
time spent consulting with people who under11
stand accessibility. When these conditions
!. aren't met, then the cost of accessibility bei
comes dollars spent in order to correct mistakes.
I These mistakes may have been made as a result
i of ignorance, but (for the reasons cited above)
e ignorance is no excuse.
s Finally, accessibility harms no one. Does a
a wheelchair ramp get in the way of someone
t walking? Does a 36-inch door on a bathroom
i make it harder to get in? Would electric doors
on every classroom building at the university in
3 any way impair a student's ability to have acf
cess to those buildings?
t What price should the university pay to make
its buildings accessible to everyone?
