Shuttlecocks' r some stops elin From staff reports Several changes are in store for students who plan to use the Shuttlecock to get around campus this fall. The system will still operate with five buses, which will run two basic routes in clockwise and counterclockwise patterns around the USC campus, said Brian Barnes of Transportation Services. He said some new stops have been added and several stops have been eliminated from the old routes. The new system was designed by the Parking Committee, a group consisting of parking officials and university students. The major differences in the shuttle system will be that the shuttle will no longer make stops at the Swearingen Engineering Center, the Assembly Street side of Carolina Coliseum and The Roost, Barnes said. These are three of six stops that have been eliminated altogether, he said. Barnes said service has not been eliminated for passengers wishing to travel to the engineering building. The buses will be stopping a block away from it, rather than stopping right in front of the building. "We tried to eliminate stops that were close together. Eliminating stops speeds up time, which was a concern of students," Shuttlecock system coordinator Derrick Huggins said. Shuttle stop convenience was also taken into consideration, Huggins said. Two new stops have been added to the system ? one at the intersection of Wheat and Sumter streets and the other at the intersection of Catawba and Sumter streets. Huggins said the elimination of the Pendleton Street and Sumter Street stops was because of safety concerns. Making the right turn and then stopping in that area was dangerous. There will not be a bus that goes from the Bates House/Cliff Apartments area to the coliseum. Students will either have to take one bus to the Towers, get off and walk down Devine Street to get to the coliseum, or ride the shuttle to the nursing building and transfer buses, Huggins said. "We tried to get out of the business of busing people to classes," he said. "We're trying to provide transportation on campus. These maps are at the Russell House information desk and at Transportation Services.
