There is little doubt that 1988
was the best finish ever for the
Gamecock soccer program. The
team finished 14-4-4, outscored its
opponents 46-12, received an
NCAA bid for the fourth year in a
row, and advanced to the NCAA

Of that squad, 11 lettermen, of
whom five were starters, are not
returning. But the largest void to
fill is the goalkeeper position vacated
by the graduation of Charles
Arndt.
Arndt had a spectacular season
that saw him break two team records
for career minutes played
and top career goals-against average.
He was also named All-South,
Ail-American, Academic AllAmerican,
and the John M. Johnson
(team MVP) award winner.
However, the 1989 squad is optimistic
as 14 lettermen and six
starters are returning to form a
good blend of youth and experience
on the field. A preseason poll

tion, which came as a surprise to
head coach Mark Berson.
"It surprised me a little bit.
However, I don't think a very fair
outlook could be projected until
we get into the season," he said.
"Realistically, we have to say that
during the beginning of the season
we are going to be inexperienced.
We do have a good nucleus of
players returning, but when you
make changes with the other players
on the field, the chemistry and
the way you play changes. Thus,
inconsistency has been the biggest
problem."
Up front in the attacking position,
the Gamecocks should be
strong as two of three starters return.
Sophomore Jonas Gudjonsson,
USC's leading scorer this past
year with nine goals and five assists,
will be counted on heavily.
Also, junior Clark Brisson, a
seven-game starter who came on
strong late in the season, will be
joined by Andrew Coggins, who
played in 19 of 22 matches.
