1 For Men and Worn,
may not get
Athens. No problem, schools lease out their stadiums
for special events all the time.
But this of course is USC ? where such
seemingly simple decisions are met with great
gnashing of teeth and idiocy.
Now, it looks like the special panel will not
come up with a plan before Sept. 30 ? meaning
the Stones' onlv cdimnse nf Smith
will come from a DC-10 at 30,000 feet.
Dixon, USC's gung-ho, ex-marine A.D., said
he wanted to maintain the "integrity" of
Williams-Brice. Honestly. Perhaps the real reason
is that he just doesn't want a rock 'n' roll
band in the stadium. Never mind the possible
$250,000 the school could make from the show;
never mind the fact the stadium also belongs to
students who would probably rather see the
Stones than Billy Graham or the pope.
The Rolling Stones are a randy lot. Sure,
they're not the kind of boys you'd want your
daughter to bring home. They've been busted
with drugs a few times. People even got killed
by the Hell's Angels at one of their shows in
California many, many years ago.
But the Stones have reached a mellow midage.
So have most of their fans. Their presence

i would trunk that the majority of USC students
agree that the Stones should be allowed to
play here. I would even think it would be worth
writing and letting Holderman and Dixon know
just how you feel. Maybe receiving a few thousand
nasty letters would turn the nut. Maybe.
But in case students don't decide to do that,
maybe it would turn the administration on to
realize that the $250,000 it could earn could be
put to good use. No, not athletics, not foundations,
not gifts to well-heeled donors, and definitely
not pay raises for do-nothing celebrity
professors. Instead it could be used for scholarships
for needy and talented students crushed
by one of the highest college tuitions among
public institutions in the Southeast.
That way you could entertain, educate and recoup
a sagging public image all at once. And
face it, Mr. Holderman and Mr. Dixon ? this
school could sorely use all three.
