Quarterback Michael Carr, who may be the focus of
an NCAA investigation into possible recruiting viola- i
tions by Clemson, has disappeared, leaving school officials
wondering where he is and why he has not contacted
the school. i
Carr missed practice Thursday morning and after- ;
noon and has not been heard from, Sports Information
Director Tim-Bourret said.
"Ford is trying to make contact with Carr, but he
has been unsuccessful." Bourret said <
Bourret said Clemson did not believe Carr's disap- ]
pearance had anything to do with newspaper repeats
saying the NCAA may be focusing a reported investi- <
gauon on ms recruitment Dy Clemson. \
Instead, Bourret said officials think Carr might have j
been upset by his play in a scrimmage Wednesday j
and worried he was going to be dropped to third string ]
in his battle for the starting quarterback job. Canplayed
in the scrimmage despite a sprained ankle and .
missed all five of his passes, Bounet said. c
Can apparently left the campus about 5 a.m. Thurs- t
day and went to the train station to go home or to St 1
Louis, where he has some family, according to a
Clemson source. i
Earlier Thursday, Can's high school coach said his \
former star player told him the Tigers broke NCAA
rules while recruiting him. Can was one of Clemson's t
top recruits in 1988 but was red-shirted as a freshman i
after breaking his arm before the season started.
Amite (La.) High School Coach Gary Hendry said s
Can talked with him after last season and told him he s
was thinking about transferring from Clemson. a
Hendry said Can was still in high school when "I h

Hendry said his interest was further heightened when
Carr came home last Christmas driving a 1988 Toyota
Supra, which new lists for more than $20,000.
Carr's brother, Chuck Carr Brown, a chemical engineer
in Baton Rouge, La., may have bought the car,
according to one report When contacted at his home
Thursday, Brown said he would not "respond one

officials not to comment on the alleged NCAA
probe.
Athletic Director Bobby Robinson said at a news
inference Wednesday ? and reiterated it Thursday
through a spokesman ? that he did not want Ford, his
issistants or players talking to reporters because he
Felt it was best to have all comments coming from one
person.
Clemson announced Thursday a special panel of faulty
and administrators would look into the allegaions
? the second time this decade the Tigers have
>een the focus of the NCAA.
Clemson was put on two years probation beginning
n 1982 for recruiting violations, one year after they
von the national championship.
Robinson refused an interview request, but said
hrough a spokesman that the school also was looking
nto the allegations concerning Carr.
Hendry said he talked with the NCAA in February
hortly after Carr signed with Clemson in what he
aid was a "routine" investigation by the NCAA of
11 highly recruited athletes, but had not talked to
fCAA investigators since then.
