From staff reports
"The Ultimate Spirit of Carolina"
is what Homecoming officials have
coined this year's festivities for the
week-long celebration in October.
The theme, selected by the
Homecoming Commission in the spring,
is directly derived from the
university's new registered logo "The
USC."
The annual Homecoming week
events will begin Oct. 4 and end Oct.
1 when the Gamecocks take on East
Carolina.
"The commission has already pulled
together some great events for
homecoming week," Homecoming
publicity chairman Rob Thomas
said.

Minority students have been attending
USC for more than 25 years.
Only three minority students were
originally admitted to USC, but now
about 2,500 minority undergraduates
attend the university annually which
is about 13 percent of the USC Columbia
campus enrollment.
The Office of Minority Student
Affairs assists minority students in
their academic, social, and cultural
development.
The major programs and services
coordinated through the office are:
Advising the Association of
Afro-American Students and
assisting in the coordination of Black
History Month activities.

"An information book with
deadlines and qualifying forms for
Homecoming competitions and

organizations," Thomas said.
Organizations should receive their information

The commission is also seeking
students to serve on one of eight different
Homecoming committees. Interested
students should write the

About 120 incoming Fall
Freshmen experienced the very first
Carolina Camp during the weekend
of June 23-25.
Modeled after the successfully

orientation program designed
to ease the transition from high
school to university life, program
director Ronnie Laffitte said.
Twenty or so hard-working
volunteer student counselors joined
keynote speaker John Gardner and
Student Government President
Marie-Louise Ramsdale, among
others, in a concentrated effort to
impart as much wisdom, advice, and
yes, fun, to the new students as
possible.

Did the participating freshmen enjoy
the camp? Was it a success?
Freshman Dori Kasparek of Rock

educational. It taught us about where
to go if we needed help and who to
see. And if we needed advice, speak
up and not lay back and let it tear us
down under. It encouraged us to get
involved with the student activities
on campus. But, most of all, it was
