Sabrina Le Beauf, best known as Sondra on The
Cosby Show, will play the leading role in William
Shakespeare's As You Like It at the Koger Center
for the Arts June 22-24.
The production will be presented by the
Shakespeare Theatre at the Folger in Washington,
D.C.
As You Like It played at the Folger until June
18, and is coming to Columbia for this special
performance.
As You Like It is a blithe, romantic comedy,
drawing its strength from the character of
Rosalind, one of Shakespeare's most attractive and
witty heroines. Rosalind is banished from Duke
Frederick's court to the forest of Arden, where she
disguises herself as a man and relies on her wits and
play-acting to survive.
The role of Rosalind is undertaken by Le Beauf,
whose switch from television to the stage has won
her praise from numerous theater critics this
spring.
Michael Killian of The Chicago Tribune described
Le Beauf as "endearingly winsome," and Mel
Gussow of The New York Times wrote, "She is an
articulate, classically trained actress quite adept at
playing Shakespeare. As required by Rosalind, she
has the talent to alter her personality as well as her

Le Beauf, 31, earned a master's in acting from
the Yale School of Drama in 1983 and has perf

Playwrights' Conference, the Manhattan Punchline
Theatre and the Yale Repertory Theatre.
Other cast members include Mark Philpot as
Orlando, Edward Gero as Oliver, Ted van
Griethuysen as Jaques, Melissa Gallagher as Celia
and Floyd King as Touchstone.
The production is directed by Michael Kahn, the
Folger's artistic director. Kahn recently was awarded
the John Houseman Award by the Acting Company
for his dedication to the development of
young American actors.
Since assuming the artisic leadership of the
Folger in 1986, Kahn has directed Romeo and
Juliet, All's Well That Ends Well, Macbeth and
Antony and Cleopatra.
The Folger's trip to Columbia is the result of a
unique collaboration between USC and the
Shakespeare Theatre at the Folger.
In exchange for financial support from USC, the
Folger provides acting internships each year to

about eight graduate students in the USC theatre
and speech department. In addition, members of
the Folger company teach on campus two days a
week during fall and spring semesters.
USC interns Paris Peet, Lisa Rhoden, Melanie
Parent, Steve Harley, Jim Hughes, Linda Khoury,
Dale Simington and Jan Notzen will also be appearing
in the production.
Interns went to Washington in August of last
year to take classes, rehearse and perform. When
the show closes June 24, the interns will be going
their separate ways after banding together for 10

USC graduate Paris Peet will travel to North 1
Carolina to teach speech and acting at East
Carolina. He will also be directing.
Linda Rhoden plans to work in a theater in
Missouri until Aug. 6, and then return to USC to 1
attain a master's degree.
Although she admits that it will be hard to return ?
to a university after being a part of a professional 1
company, she hopes to take what she has learned
and observed and apply it to her own style.
"It'll be a growth experience," Rhoden said.
