Delicate and charming Classic dramc By TRACY FAIR [7~~ Staff writer Madame Butterfly debuted ostentatiously at the Koger Arts Center M^rch 3. Once the myriad of beautifully coiffed and dressed women and men were seated and quiet, the lights dimmed and conductor Donald Portnov hroueht forth his talents S through the USC School of Music, filling the structure s renowned for its acoustics with rich and powerful orchestral manuevers ? so powerful, in fact, that during f the first act the orchestra occasionally drowned out the \ performers. r The intriguing tale of Madame Butterfly, Puccini's famous love story about a disasterous marriage arranged < between a young Japanese girl, Cio-Cio San or "Butterf- c ly," and an American soldier, B. F. Pinkerton, unfolds to 1 reveal a pregnant Butterfly waiting patiently and faithfully for Pinkerton's return. She soon discovers he has aban- F doned the marriage contract according to Japanese law t and married a woman back in the United States. Pinker- c ton, learning of the son Butterfly has borne him, returns s and takes the child away from her. Understandably distraught, Butterfly commits suicide. e The performance of the cast was impressive, and Ann 1 Benson-Tecklenburg's depiction of the beautiful Butterfly i was memorable. Not only iuperb were her musical abilities, but also her grace and ;kill as an actress. Michael Philip Davis, who played Pinkerton, artfully portrayed the young and pretentious American Soldier, vhose cavalier treatment of Butterfly later brings him nuch pain. Mary Deyerle as Suzuki, Madame Butterfly's servant, lisplayed a powerful voice; but her stage presence, in :omparison to Benson-Tecklenburg's, was awkward and ler movements rather wooden at times. If anyone stole the show that evening, however, it was vtason Todd who played Sorrow, Butterfly and Pinkeron's son. Though he neither sang nor spoke, his blond :urls and spontaneous, childlike affection for Butterfly ind Suzuki captured the audience. The scenery was very well done as was the costuming, :xcept for one character whose headress made him look ike like nothing else than an Oriental smurf. Altogether, t was a thoroughly entertaining evening, and the efreshments at intermission weren't half bad either. wtoaet i college v y to spars Buy a Macintosh. s if'! i I ; i j ~ KAA , nuu pk* Pjvs Hit 500&rs00ct ; Jet a nice, fat check. you buy selected Macintosh?SE or Macintosh II computers, you 11 etail price of the Apple? peripherals you add on-so you'll save uj ails today where computers are sold on campus. ?
