A lot has happened since USC and t
Clemson met on the basketball court a
two months ago. F
Since that 90-70 USC win over the Tigers
Dec. 3 at"Carolina Coliseum, I
several interesting tnings nave
occurred:
The Gamecocks have been in
and out of the national rankings, appearing
as high as No. 16 after wins
over Top 20 opponents Tennessee
and Ohio State. USC dropped out
after only two weeks in the polls
because of back-to-back losses to
LaSalle and Princeton at the Cotton
States Classic Dec. 29-30 in Atlanta.
USC's 12-3 record after 15
games marked the best start by a
Gamecock team in 15 years, since
Frank McGuire's 1973-74 squad, the
last USC team to appear in the
NCAA tournament.
Since that 12-3 start, USC has
dropped two last-second heartbreakers,
69-67 to Metro Conference
rival Florida State and 87-86 to lowly
Oral Roberts.
After the loss to the Gamecocks
dropped the Tigers to 2-1, Clemson
won 10 of its next 12 games and three
of its first four Atlantic .Coast Con- |
ference contests to take a share of the ft
ACC lead.
That's when Clemson had its 1
problems. There was a reported alter- /
cation between some Tiger players f
and university police after a home _
win over Western Carolina. Then,
after a 7S-74 ln? tf) Afr\p Pipnroia
Tech, seven players were suspended
by Tiger head coach Cliff Ellis for
violating study hall rules. The Tigers
played last Sunday's game at Duke, a
92-62 loss, with only seven players,
including the team's manager, dressed
out.
All was forgiven, however,
when the seven returned for Wednesday
night's game with No. 3 North (
Carolina and led the Tigers to an
Golf team tied for f
eighth in tourney .
The USC men's golf team was in a (
three-way tie for eighth place (in a 2
field of 21 schools) with a combined (
total of 304 after the first round of 8
the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate S
Tournament being held at the Tournament
Players Club at Starpass.
i
The Gamecocks were led by senior
Bruce Bulina, who shot a first-round J
74 and is tied for sixth place overall.

scores: Robert Dargan, 76; v
Jeff Hull, 77; Rick Williams, 77; f

The latest to honor Williams, 6'2"
181 pounds, was The Sporting News,
which selected him to a first team

will "publish its entire All-America
team in an issue in late February.
Earlier, Collegiate Baseball
selected Williams to a first team
berth as a utility player on its
preseason All-America, and Baseball
America chose him as a pitcher on its
third team.
In 1988, as a freshman, Williams

tion within the ACC. so I'd definitely
have to say they're a better team."
As for the Gamecocks, Felton said
the week off (USC hasn't played
since last Saturday's loss at Oral
Roberts) has helped his team.
"I'm kind of glad we didn't have a
game this week, because we had an
opportunity to get in some valuable
days in terms of practice and looking
at some special situations. . . what
we need to do and what we need to
execute ? just an overall tune-up.
When you have time off, it does give
you a little bit of an edge in that
you're not worried about one oppo
nent after another."
USC will be led by senior center
John Hudson, who continues to top
the Gamecocks in both scoring and
rebounding. Hudson is averaging
16.1 points and 8.2 boards a game.
Sophomore guards Brent Price and
Barry Manning are averaging 14.1
and 12.5 points a game, respectively,
and senior forward Terry Dozier is
also averaging in double figures at
10.3. Freshman forward Joe Rhett
(6.9 points a game) is the likely fifth
starter, while redshirt freshman
center Jeff Roulston (5.4 points a
contest) has scored 46 points in the
last four games. Roulston had 14
points in the first game against the
Tigers.
Junior center Elden Campbell
leads Clemson with an average of
16.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per
game, followed by guard Derrick
Forrest at 12.0 points a game, and
Davis at 11.8 points and 8.6 rebounds
a contest. Jerry Pryor and
Marion Cash round out the starting
lineup, while Tim Kincaid and
Kirkland Howling see a lot of
minutes off the bench.
USC leads the overall series with
Clemson 79-58, but the Tigers lead
35-28 in games played at Clemson
and have won the last 11 at Littlejohn
Coliseum.
