McCloud hits
with :07 left
to beat USC
By JEFF NICHOLS
Staff writer
George McCloud showed why he is considered one of
the nation's elite point guards Thursday night as he hit a
clutch three-pointer with :07 remaining to give the Florida
State Seminoles a 69-67 victory over USC.
McCloud came out firing in the second half after
sophomore guard Barry Manning held him to only three
points in the first half. McCloud came into the game
averaging 23.6 points a contest.
"We did everything that we wanted to do in the first
half," USC guard Barry Manning said. "But it's tough to
stop a player like him over the course of a game."
"I think you can understand why George McCloud is
considered to be a first-round NBA draft pick," USC
head coach George Felton said. "He hit a big-time
jumper."
Florida State head coach Pat Kennedy said he was
pleased with the win.
"George McCloud is a great player. I'm looking for
him all the time to pull us through. We wouldn't be 15-1
without him," Kennedy said.
Manning, who had six steals on the night in an outstanding
defensive effort, carried the Gamecocks offensively
down the stretch, hitting four jumpers in a row including
a 19-foot jumper from the right side to put the
Gamecocks ahead 61-60 with 3:12 remaining.

hands six times in the next two and a half minutes. Senior
Terry Dozier hit both ends of a one-and-one to put the
Gamecocks ahead 67-66 with :37 remaining.
After an FSU timeout, McCloud cooly pumped in the
20-foot three-pointer from the left wing for the final
margin. The victory hands the Gamecocks their fourth
loss of the season and their first at home.
"As soon as I let the ball go, I knew it was going in,"
McCloud said.
McCloud finished the game with 17 points.
"I am proud of the effort we gave tonight," said
Felton. "Our crowd was tremendous. It was a big-time
college basketball atmosphere. It's a tough loss, but we
have nothing to be ashamed of and no reason to hang our
heads."
USC was ahead 32-30 at halftime after shooting only 40
percent in the first half. For the game, the Gamecocks
shot only 43 percent compared to 59 percent for the
Seminoles. USC, however, was strong on the offensive
glass as they hauled down 13 offensive rebounds compared
to only three for FSU.
Senior John Hudson led USC with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Manning added 14 points, and Dozier had 11 ?
six of which came in the last two minutes.

said Hunter's play was a key to the Seminoles' sucess.
"We felt that if we were going to win, Tat Hunt
would have to have a great game," Kennedy said. "V
found him a lot behind the defense. It's tough to win c
the road in the Metro and this is a great win for us."
With the loss, USC falls to 12-4 overall and 2-2 in tl
Metro. Florida State improves to 15-1 and 3-0 in tl

Through the strong inside play of 1
Beth Hunt and the fast-break pro- t
wess of Lisa Diaz, the Ladv s
Gamecock basketball team erased an \
11-point second-half deficit to defeat t
rival Clemson 64-62 Thursday at
Carolina Coliseum. t
"We believed we could win this c
game and did what we had to do to
win it," said USC head coach Nancy (
Wilson. "Everyone stepped up to 1
make the win."
The first half was marred by slop- f
py play on both parts. Poor passing s
combined with bad decision-making
resulted in 13 first-half turnovers for
USC.
With the physical play inside the
paint, the lead switched back and
i? forth for the majority of the first
half. But with 1:28 left to play in the
half, Clemson senior forward Karen
Ann Jenkins gave her club a fivepoint
lead over the Lady Gamecocks.
Senior guard Martha Parker cut
the Clemson lead to two points with a
free throw to end the half, 33-31.
"Martha Parker was a major force
in the first half. She had an excellent
pj game," Wilson said.

er Down 52-41 with 11:16 remaining,
/e USC began an 11-0 spurt that
3n brought them back in the game. Diaz
directed the comeback with a spinnhe
ing four-foot jumper, a free throw,
as well as penetrating the Clemson
al defense on two straight USC possessions
for a pair of layups that cut the
lead to 52-48.
Parker capped off the rally with
0, four points, the last two coming from
yd a six-foot turnaround jumper tying
13 the score at 52-52 with 7:30 left in the I
game. *
"It took that spurt to get back into
ce the game," said forward Beth Hunt.
-2 "It showed a lot of togetherness."
