Shooting 76 percent from the foul
line and 39 percent from the field,
USC edged the Cincinnati Bearcats
Saturday afternoon at the Carolina
Coliseum, 73-69.
It was a close game throughout,
and while the Gamecocks led most of
the way, their biggest lead was only 8
points, with 7:06 remaining in the
game.
"I expected a tough game today. I
didn't think we were going to come in
here and blow anybody out," said
USC head coach George Felton.
"The most important thing is that we
came out ahead, despite our deficiencies
and some of our highs and
lows."
Coming off a disheartening 75-52
loss to Louisville Wednesday night,
the Gamecocks were looking for an
emotional lift in this game.
"For the character of this team to
come back and hang in there today, I
think it's a really positive sign,"
Felton said.
The Bearcats took the lead three
times during the course of the game,
but were unable to put together a
surge once they were ahead. Their
biggest advantage was two points,
and none of their leads lasted a full
minute on the clock.
In the second half, USC briefly fell
behind 41-40 with 17:22 remaining,
but Hudson made a pair of foul shots
and followed them with a resounding
dunk and a free throw to complete a
three-point play and give the
Gamecocks a 45-41 lead, which they
never lost.
It was a game that saw five ties in
the first half and plenty of physical
contact, which resulted in 44 personal
fouls between the two teams.
Cincinnati picked up 29 of those, to
the chagrin of head coach Tony
Yates.
In response to a reporter's question
on the foul situation, Yates said,
chuckling, "Don't get me started on
that. Let's stay clean."
Of particular concern to the Cincinnati
coach was the foul trouble of
his star center, Cedric Glover, who
had no points and one rebound at the
intermission. Glover sat out most of
the first half, .after picking\,up two
holding fouls in a 10-second span two

USC assistant football coach A1
Groh told The Gamecock Sunday
that he would have no comment on
reports that he will not be offensive
coordinator next season.
The State newspaper said Friday
that Groh was demoted from offensive
coordinator to quarterback
coach and that the Gamecocks will
return to the run-and-shoot offense,
which they utilized in 1986 and 1987.
USC will be leaving the pro-set offense,
which had more than its share
of problems in 1988.
Groh plans to interview for the
head coaching job at the University
of Richmond, and if he stays at USC,
he will become the quarterback coach
for next season, the story said.
The Gamecocks, whose offense
seemed to be working well when they
jumped out to a 6-0 mark this past
season, lost four of its last six games,

Conference rival Louisville Saturday,
81-74.
USC, which lost 82-73 at home to
Georgia Thursday night, showed little
sign that the loss to the Lady
Bulldogs had affected them adversely,
overcoming a 38-36 halftime
deficit to defeat the Lady Cardinals
at Freedom Hall, a site where the
USC men's team had been defeated
by 23 points three days earlier.
Sophomore forward Beth Hunt led
a balanced Lady Gamecock attack
with 23 points, followed by Schonna
Banner and Martha Parker with 16
points each, Karen Middleton with
11, and Lisa Diaz with 10. Banner led
in rebounds with 10.
USC improved to 10-1 and 3-0 in
the Metro. With wins in 10 of its first
11 games, USC has tied the record

USC's offensive output dropped
considerably in 1988, compared to
the 1986 and 1987 seasons when they
ran the run-and-shoot. Although
they managed only a 3-6-2 record in
1986, quarterback Todd Ellis passed
for over 3,020 yards and 20
touchdowns.
In 1987,Ellis threw for 3,206 yards
and 10 touchdowns in leading the
("lamprnrWc tn an 8-4 r^rnrd and a
Gator Bowl berth. Ellis' statistics
dropped considerably to 2,353 yards
and nine touchdowns in 1988, while
the USC offense scored only two
touchdowns in the last six games.
The Gamecocks averaged 28.5
points per game in 1986 and 28.4 in
1987. In 1988, USC managed only
19.3 points per game and scored only
62 points in the last six games. Twenty
one of those points were scored by
the defense.
