The burglaries that occurred on campus during
the Christmas holiday have left unanswered questions
about campus security in the minds of many
students.
Burglary victim John K. Nations, interdisciplinary
senior, said he has been living on campus
at USC since his freshman year, and one thing
university housing always does is make students
leave campus during the holiday break.
"When I first saw this happening, I asked
around to find out why they do that, and why can't
students stay if they want, since they paid for the
room.' They say it s tor security reasons, so they
won't have a large number of people messing
around during the holidays," Nations said.

Students are allowed to live on campus during
the Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring breaks,
provided they pay a fee, said Michelle Wright,
secretary to James Smart in University Housing.
But before a dorm can be left open, at least 10
students have to sign up to stay.
Students living in campus apartments such as
Cliff apartments are allowed to stay, but they too
must pay a fee, Wright said.
Ronnie Roberts, commander of university
police, said the occupied dorms have staff who are
responsible for making sure the building is secure
and for reporting suspicious individuals to the
police.

"We (university police) just don't have the manpower
to check every door knob on campus. It
would take at least a hundred officers. But the
police officers on duty do check those buildings
that are supposed to be closed down," he said.
Some of the buildings that were burglarized were
staffed and had people living in them, Roberts
said.
"We try to keep the facilities on campus secure,
and when we find a breach in security, we do what
we can to make things better," said Danny Baker,
assistant vice president of law enforcement. "We
are always reviewing and making improvements.
