Momma-mia does it ever. We just received the 35th anniversary issue of Playboy. So, just because Heff got married, and it's a big month and all, those in power (Me) decided to run a bit of a column on this ever-popular magazine. First, the facts. Fact 1 Playboy is the world's best-selling magazine for men. The U.S. edition is read by one out of eight adult males and countless non-adult males. In the United States, Playboy outsells such major consumer magazines such as Newsweek, People and Penthouse. Fact 2 Boarts International Inc., a subsidiary of Playboy lnterprises, is a leading international distributer of U.S. periodicals and paperback books. Shocking, isn't it? I had always been under the impression that I was the only kid on our block whose dad read Playboy. Just think of the popularity that could have been shared had a few of the other kids' dads kept their copies out of the closet. Apparently, there are charms in abundance in this bastion of literary achievement. It must be the articles. Playboy was first published by Hugh Hefner in December 1953. The first edition featured a full-color nude of the one and only Marilyn Monroe and was, not surprisingly, an instant success. Playboy has extended both its success and its sphere of influence by providing in-depth interviews with such well-known and controversial characters as Malcolm X, Salvador Dali, Martin Luther King, Fidel Castro, Hunter S. Thompson, Jimmy Hoffa, G. Gordon Liddy, Cheech and Chong, Gen. Richard Secord and David Letterman. The 35th anniversary playmate is Fawna MacLaren. MacLaren, a California girl who has also lived in Canada and France, is a professional model who has worked for major magazines such as Elle and Vogue. For her hard work with Playboy, which includes not only this month's pictorial but also a full-length video, MacLaren receives $35,000 and all the glitz that goes along with the muchcoveted Playmatedom.
