Ladies open
with victories
The Lady Gamecock basketball
team opened its 1988-89 season last
weekend with two victories over
Rhode Island and Holy Cross at the
Hart Center in Worcester, Mass.
Saturday, USC defeated the
Rams of Rhode Island, 92-55, as
junior guard Lisa Diaz led the Lady
Gamecocks with 21 points. Beth
Hunt and Martha Parker added 19
and 15 points, respectively.
Sunday, USC came away with an
80-75 victory over a tough Holy
Cross team. Hunt, a sophomore
transfer from Maryland, scored 26
points to lead the Lady
Gamecocks, while Parker scored 20
and Karen Middleton added 11.
USC, 2-0, plays at Appalachian
State this Saturday.

Manning, who averaged 6.3 points as a freshman la

But Manning had plenty of help.

also dished out 13 assists, while Rhett didn't miss a shot i

USC wasted no time in jumping on the Senators, sco
ing the first 14 points of the game, before Lander's Roh
Mulkey hit a free throw to put his team on tf
scoreboard.
USC head coach George Felton took advantage of tt
Gamecocks' huge spread to substitute freely, givin
young USC reserves such as freshmen Troy McKoy, Jo J
English and Sam Rowe valuable playing time. Every teai
member played, and all but one scored.
"I'm just really pleased with the effort we ha
tonight," Felton said. "I thought the entire team reall
displayed teamwork. Everyone was looking for on
another, and I thought there was a lot of unselfish play.
Felton would often substitute as many as four or fiv
players at a time, giving the starters a chance to rest an

ie Carolina's got a great basketball team because they've got
the right players at the right positions, and they've got a
ie lot of depth. We've just got a tremendous amount of
ig respect*for them. I think they're going to be a factor in the

Lander shot 27.6 percent (8-29) from the field in the
d first half, compared to USC's 84.6 percent (22-26). For
