Every college basketball player is eager in
mid-November. It's only natural. Practice has
been going on for about a month and that longawaited
season opener is just a few days away.
Anticipation has been building all summer. For
some, it started when the clock ran out in the
final game last year.
Then there's Beth Hunt, a 6-foot-l-inch
transfer who comes to the Lady Gamecocks
from the University of Maryland. She's been
waiting on the 1988-89 season, not since last
season ended, but since it began.
That's because the former prep All-American
was forced to sit out the 1987-88 season in compliance
with National Collegiate Athletic
Association rules after she transferred from '
Maryland following her freshman year.
"I've been anticipating this season starting
since last November when I transferred," Hunt
said. "I knew the wait was going to be long. It
really got bad this summer when school got out,
and I was sitting at home, but once school got
started again it got a little bit better. Now, I'm
really looking forward to this year."
Hunt brings a long list of credentials to a
Lady Gamecock squad that finished 23-11 last
year and is looking to repeat as Metro Conference
Champions.
She was named the USA Today High School
Player of The Year in 1986 and was the only
high school player to make the South team that
participated in the National Sports Festival
after her junior year at Myrtle Beach's Socastee
High School. Hunt also participated in the
event after a stellar senior season that saw her
not only make several Ail-American teams, but
also establish herself as one of the top high
school players in the nation.
Hunt's success in high school carried over to
her freshman year at Maryland. She fulfilled expectations
by leading the Lady Terrapins in
both scoring and rebounding as a freshman.
Hunt averaged 16 points and 9 boards a game
and was named ACC Rookie of the Year.
What more could a young college basketball
player want?
It depends on the person. Hunt still felt
sometning was lacKing.

because I wanted to be closer to home, and I'm
definitely closer to home here," she said. "You
can be close to home, go to school, play basketball
and do it all if you're close enough."
So last year at this time, when that midNovember
eagerness was setting in, Hunt knew
she could only practice with her new team. She
knew then that it would be a year before she
would see action in a game. Now, finally, she
can adopt an old Gamecock maxim from the recent
past, "This is next year."
And Hunt couldn't be happier. Although
she's struggled at times this year in practice,
Hunt says "that's getting cleared up really
quick."
Part of the early difficulties she's had result
from not only having to sit out every game last
year, but also from missing three months of
practice following surgery she had on her left
knee last Oct. 30.
"It's almost like being a freshman again
sometimes," Hunt said. "You're kind of learning
everything new. Sometimes, you draw a
blank. But with practice and repetition, that
clears up in a hurry."
Hunt's numbers and accolades attest to the
fact that she's got a lot of talent. But her biggest
asset to the Lady Gamecocks may be her
versatility.
Hunt will probably be called on to play all
three front line positions this year, and because
she started as guard at Maryland, she'll also see
some time in the backcourt, although Martha

a good start."
Hunt did say she thought this year's team will
ve "higher goals than any team here has
d."
"I would feel real comfortable saying that,"
e said.
The Lady Gamecocks lost to Texas in the se
nd round of the NCAA tournament last year
ter winning the Metro Conference crown.
One more thing. This year, John Hudson and
). may not be the only players dunking for
sC in the Carolina Coliseum.
That's right. If the left leg of Beth Hunt
urns to full strength soon, well, move over
idson, the 6-foot-l-inch "Air Hunt" may be
ised to do something few women have ever
ne ? dunk in a game.
"I was kind of fooling around at the College
Charleston last week and I was surprisd how
>se I was, so that's something that's not far
f at all because I've done it (dunked) before,"
mt said.
But will she try it in a game?
"I'll try it in a game if the situation is right,"
e said. That's one of those things where if you
t the opportunity like that, you always have it
the back of your mind."
But it's possible we'll only mull over what
ght have been. Hunt has had surgery on her
t knee twice, the first time while she was still
Maryland, which makes her accomplishments
:re even more noteworthy. She says her left
: is only 85 percent strong now, and at one
te it was almost an inch and a half smaller
in her right leg due to atrophy, which would
sp even Michael Jordan from getting up as
;h as he could.
At any rate, Hunt says she's being patient
ring her recovery. After last year, she knows
it how to do that.
And while she would love to dunk, and mieht
it do it, she's plenty happy just knowing she'll
playing in a USC uniform this November.
As rock artist Tom Petty says in one of his
rigs, "The waiting is the hardest part." For
th Hunt, the waiting is over.
