When students and faculty returned to USC this
semester, they found an old friend had closed its
doors.
The Nickelodeon Theater had served the community
and USC for more than 10 years, showing a
variety of foreign and alternative films. The
theater, located on Main Street, was closed because
of financial problems.
The Bijou in Five Points had also been closed
because loud music from Greenstreet's interrupted
movies and ticket sales fell. Competition from
other theaters and the availability of video
recorders also reduced audience, said Dennis
Nolan, a USC law professor and member of a
group working to reopen the The Bijou.
Because the only two alternative theaters in Columbia
had closed their doors, a community group
that included some USC faculty and graduate
students decided to launch an effort to reopen the
Nickelodeon.
Because of the group's hard work, the Nickelodeon
? after a three-month hiatus ? will reopen

A celebration of the reopening will begin at 6:30

More than 20 people have been involved in the
hundreds of hours of work involved in the
reorganization and reopening of the theater, Nolan
said.
"To give you an idea of the time spent, the first
thing we had to do was to figure out an accurate
mailing list," Nolan said. "When we started, we
had to go through 3,000 names on the mailing list
ana iracK aown every name. That took 327 manhours
of work just to clean up the mailing list."
The community group, with David Whiteman as
the coordinator, also launched a massive fundraising
campaign to reopen the Nickelodeon.
Whiteman said the group felt the theater served 9
vital function to the cultural community and 1
should be saved for all to enjoy. ]
The Columbia Film Society, which technically 1
operates the- Nickelodeon but has only existed on i

reopening and launching of the campaign,
Whiteman said.
To strengthen the organization, the society's
board of directors has been expanded to include
people actively involved in Nickelodeon's
operations.
Also, theater ODerations have heen snlit i tr?
gramming and finance. Dale Campbell will continue
to handle programming, while a financial
planning committee will work with an accountant
to keep all records and obligations in order.
The theater will operate Wednesday through
Sunday with showings at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Nolan said the theater is open to the community,
and USC is particularly welcome. He said a special
$10 annual membership will be available to USC
students.
To increase revenue, the Nickelodeon will require
anyone wishing to see films at the theater to
purchase a membership. Annual and temporary
two-week memberships are available and offer a
reduced rate of $3 per show. Non-members wishing
to join may see their first movie for $5.
