The crowd that took advantage of
Rockafellas' free acoustic night this
past Sunday was treated to an evening
of top-rate entertainment from
impressive new band the Killing
Floor and Columbia veteran Craig
Wright.
The Killing Floor is G. Jason
Brazell on guitar, Gerd Faulstich on
drums, Russ Watson on bass guitar
and Chris Compton on vocals and
harmonica. The band's strength lies
in lead singer Compton's hands.
Compton doesn't have"a spectacular
voice, but it is intriguing. Musical
greats Dylan and Springsteen do not
have strong voices but charisma,
presence and direction. With some
searching and trial-and-error, I think
Compton will find his direction.
With a lot of discipline, he can
develop his voice to the band's
advantage.
The Killing Floor opened with the
Doors' "Love Her Madly" ? which
didn't work ? and later attempted
"Crystal Ship" and "Roadhouse
Blues." Not that the band didn't perform
well, but Doors tunes aren't
easily covered. If a band chooses to

it extremely well. The Killing
Floor did neither. Eventually, these
songs may work for the group, but
they didn't Sunday night.
There were outstanding covers,
however, such as a slowed-down version
of John Cougar Mellencamp's
"Pink Houses." As the evening wore
on, Compton appeared more at ease,

"... well there's people, and more
people. What do they know?" I felt
good about this band and what's to
come. Other highlights were renditions
of "Little Red Rooster,"
"Peace Train" and several impressive
originals.

Compton's personality interjected into
them. At times, he held the
microphone tightly, or he'd raise his
leg and shake back his head ? as if
he was about to let loose, yet he remained
restrained. He needs to go
with the music, dissect it and make
the songs his own. I know he can.
A reviewer is placed in a tough
postition when evaluating a new
band, especially when there is a
wealth of talent and potential at
stake, as there is with the Killing
Floor. With a debut performance,
there'll always be an understandable
amount of awkwardness and nervousness
? so, things shouldn't be
expected to flow smoothly. With this
in mind, the Killing Floor performed
impressively Sunday night.
Guitarist Craig Wright is no
newcomer to the Rockafellas' or to
the town's music scene. He is an experienced
performer, and his talent
and polished sets prove that he is one
of the best this area has to offer.
Wright is an expert with his audience.
He has control of the emotional
elements of his songs. He's
aware of their meaning, and it's as if
his job is to make these songs as i

Wright opened with the Dylan confessional
tune, "When I Paint My
Masterpiece." When he sings,
". . . someday everything's going to
be smooth like a rhapsody / when I
paint my masterpiece," you know
that Wright hasn't painted his
masterpiece yet, but he wants to and
is going to in a matter of time. And
you end up wishing him luck. Packing
as much meaning into a threeminute
song as it will hold is a talent i

His sets have a constant dark,
desperate theme, and each song is
picked to accentuate this pleading
tone. Sunday, when he finished the
cryptic-like country classic "Long
Black Veil," there was a silence
before the applause ? a silence
which said a lot. His reoertoire is like
a long ride on a back road in the middle
of the night, not knowing where
you're going or how much gas you
have in the tank, but sure you'll get
there.
The rest of Wright's performance
possessed the same ease, emotion and
smoothness. Included were versions
of "All Along the Watchtower,"
"Baby Blue," "Me and Bobby
McGee" and Merle Haggard's
"Mama Tried." Wright took control
of the lyrics when he sang "... one
and only rebel child from a family
meek and mild / my mama seemed to
know what laid in store / 'spite of all
my Sunday learning / toward the bad
I kept on turning 'til mama couldn't
hold me anymore ..." Wright performed
as if this song was rooted
deep inside him, and he just wanted
to get it out to you no matter what it
took or how painful it happened to
be. He did.
