By KEVIN ADAMS
Sports editor
George Felton is ready for th
1988-89 basketball season.
"I'm very excited," said USC'
third-year head coach at hi
preseason press conference Monday
"I feel that we have a team that wil
provide enthusiasm balanced with ex
perience and a lot of youth."
Felton said youth will be a key foi
a team that has five freshman anc
only two seniors, forwards Tern
Dozier and John Hudson. USC'i
new players include freshmen Jo Jc
English, Troy McKoy, Joe Rhett anc
Sam Rowe and junior college
transfer Eric Sykes.
Basketball recruiting analysts rate
the Gamecock incoming class as one
of the top 20 in the nation. Felton
also signed Yugoslavian Junior Nationals
Obrad Ignjatovic and Bojan
Popovic. The two will be eligible to
play as freshmen in 1989-90.
"If our freshman players and our
underclassmen develop the way we
hope they are capable of developing,"
Felton said, "I really believe
that this team could provide a lot of
music in Columbia and throughout
the country."
Felton then reminisced for a while,
going back to the 1974 season when
he lettered for the Gamecocks under

That team was the last from USC to
e appear in the NCAA postseason
tournament, but Felton said this
s year's team has the potential to
s change that.
"Deep down, that's a team goal,
1 and we'd love to represent the
University of South Carolina in some
type of postseason play," he said. "I
r don't know what our record is going
1 to be; all I know is that we will work
/ extremely hard to be the best team we
; can. I'm excited about the attitudes
> of this team. It's a great group of
I young men."
: According to Felton, the leader
ship of Dozier and Hudson and the
team's versatility will go a long way
: in determining the success of this
: year's Gamecock squad.
"I think both have the potential to
take their careers further after college.
. . I'm excited about having
two young men like that, and
especially up in the front court,
because the game is a lot of times
won in the paint, and I feel that Terry
Dozier has the versatility to go inside
and outside, and John Hudson has
proven that also.
"The most unique characteristic of
this team, I think, is the versatility of
the personnel," he said. "We might
have one true point guard in Brent

combination of positions. . . so we
don't have any set positions, and I
think that's going to help us in terms
of our attack and what we'll be able
to do. I think we're going to definitely
up-tempo our offense, due to the
quickness, and that's probably to our
advantage."
A heavy schedule awaits the
Gamecocks, especially in December,
when USC hosts Clemson, Maryland
and East Carolina in a span of five
days and then takes to the road to
face Tennessee before returning to
Carolina Coliseum to play Ohio
State.
Felton agreed that the schedule is a
tough one, but said he is looking forward
to the challenge.
"I think the schedule will provide a
lot of excitement in Columbia," he
said. "I am excited about the
schedule. The schedule is going to
show us a lot early. I think it's going
to tell us where we are, what we'll
need to improve upon and what we'll
need to get ready for the Metro.
"Overall, from top to bottom, I
believe that the Metro Conference
could be at its best this year. You've
got a combination of all teams, with
their recruiting classes and returning
veterans, forming probably one of
the best conferences, I think, in the
country."

But the biggest thing Felton has
brought with him is enthusiasm
(there's that word again), to both
players and fans alike.
USC's home attendance has
dramatically increased the last two
years, ranking seventh in the country
in total audience increase during
Felton's first two years.
