Pete Larson was going from Ouagadougou ir
West Africa to Banjul, Gambia, on the Atlantic
coast.
He had lived and traveled internationally foi
more than two years, so he probably would no
have been startled to hear that-his flight would b<
rerouted through a country for which he had nc
visa, subjecting his passport to confiscation.
Or that he would irretrievably lose luggage con
taining his entire wardrobe.
Or that return reservations had dissolved, and h<
would have to charter a bus and ferry across the
Gambia River to another country and airport.
None of that would have surprised him. But he
says he never would have believed that his journej
would end here at USC.
That was November 1986, and Larson was the
new director of the International School oj
Ouagadougou, on his way to the annual conference
of the Association of International Schools ir
Africa. When he finally got there, he met Connu
Buford and Beverly Busching of the USC College
of Education. As a result, Larson and his wife
Cherie are now two of the overseas educators ai
USC working on advance degrees.
The Larsons were attracted by the College ol
Education's Service to Overseas Program through
which the university has established an active
presence in international education circles.
"We owe a lot to USC," said Tony Lanza,
regional education officer to the U.S. State Depart
ment's Office of Overseas Schools, which funds
many international schools abroad for children ol

The positive image at conferences of USC's commitment
to international education and the ability
of assistant dean Buford to promote USC as an institution
for international educators are two things
cited by Rick Spradling that attract overseas school
personnel here.
Spradling, the former head of the International
School of Libraviile, Gabon, is now a Ph.D candidate
in educational administration.
Were his expectations met?
"Absolutely," he said. "I wasn't put into a lockstep
graduate program not related to my interests,
and I was treated as a colleague in my department
from the beeinnine."
Eight educators, formerly from schools in
Burkina Faso, Gabon, Liberia. Bangladesh, Brazil
and Mexico, are enrolled in education programs
this semester, Melo said. Most of them say they
will be returning overseas to continue their work.
But, before they go, they will have made a contribution
here, according to one faculty member.
"From our perspective," said associate professor
Gale Breedlove, "one of our most beneficial *
parts of the overseas program is how it has at- '
tracted grads we wouldn't have had otherwise.
They are clearly outstanding, some of the best grad
students we have, and they offer an international .
perspective in their classes."
Since 1982, about 350 educators have enrolled in
USC courses for credit taught overseas, Melo said.
Thirty-five have come across the globe to pursue
further education at the university
