Alumni Association hi will honor distinguish) r .i.u .....a. rvum siaii reruns USC alumni will honor six prominent citizens at the alumni awards brunch during homecoming festivities Saturday. South Carolina artist Jim Harrison will be honored as 1988 Distinguished Alumnus of the University of South Carolina, and J. Stephen Beckham will receive the 1988 New Carolinian award. Harrison, a 1958 graduate of USC who makes his home in Denmark, S.C., is recognized nationally for his realistic and nostalgic paintings of country stores, barns and bridges adorned with advertising signs. His limited-edition prints are carried in more than 1,200 galleries throughout the country. Since his first prints were offered in 1971, Harrison has had 65 of his paintings issued in limitededition prints. All have sold out, many prior to publication. Beckham, the university's principal governmental liaison in Washington, D.C., is a 1978 graduate of USC. He has heen active in cnmmunitv affairs in Cnlnmhia serving as president of Columbia Forum and on the boards of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce and the S.C. Orchestra Association. He also is a member of the Leadership Columbia Committee, the Boys Club of Columbia and the Columbia Rotary Club. The New Carolinian Award honors an alumnus who has graduated from USC within the past 10 years and built a distinguished career. Receiving honorary life memberships in the Greater USC Alumni Association are alumni faculty members Chester Bain, executive director of USC's James F. Non-alumni receiving the honor are William Mescher, president and chief executive officer of Santee Cooper; and Earle E. Morris Jr., com ptroiier general or :>outh Carolina. Bain joined the USC faculty in 1960. He served as head of the department of political science, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and most recently as acting provost. Nolan, a USC faculty member for 37 years, received the Russell Award for distinguished teaching in 1958 and was named English Department Teacher of the Year in 1977. Mescher is a graduate of the University of Illinois and earned a master's in business administration with a specialization in finance from Northwestern University. He joined Santee Cooper after a 25-year career with Commonwealth Edison, Public Service of Northern Illinois and Illinois Power. Morris, a Clemson graduate with an honorary doctor of public service degree from USC, served as S.C. lieutenant governor from 1971-1975 and was a state senator from 1955-1970.
