The former USC wide receiver was
taken by the Green Bay Packers on
the seventh pick of the first round in
the National Football League draft.
Only one former Gamecock has been
picked higher ? Heisman Trophy
winner George Rogers in 1980.
In his first two pro games, both
Packer losses, Sharpe has only
caught one pass for 15 yards and has
rushed once for no gain. Those
statistics might startle fans who watched
Sharpe perform his special
blend of magic in a Gamecock
uniform. After all, Sharpe caught
169 passes for almost 2,500 yards and
17 touchdowns during his stay here,
and holds virtually all USC receiving
records.
And the numbers can't even begin
to tell the whole story of what Sharpe
can do with, and without, the football.
Numbers don't show spins,
great moves, broken tackles or the
number of defenders left in Sharpe's
tracks.
So why hasn't he made a better

Imagine being a freshman a long
way from home, and the top recruit
on this year's women's cross country
team.
That's the perspective of Jill St.
Peter, the only new runner on USC's
squad. A native of Rutland, Vt., St.
Peter was selected for All-New
England honors her senior year in
high school.
Getting St. Peter to USC wasn't an
easy task. She was also recruited by
the University of Texas, the University
of Georgia and Rutgers University.
She said she chose USC because,
:"I like it down here. In Vermont,
'there are many hills, and it is very
-cold. It's flat and warmer here. It will

quicker, smarter, and much less likely
to fall for a head fake than
anyone Sharpe saw in college. He'll
adjust, but it will take time.
Time, or lack of it, is another
reason he's having trouble. Because
of contract negotiations, Sharpe
didn't enter camp until just before
the Packers' first pre-season game,
placing him at a distinct disadvantage
to the other receivers in camp. A
playbook in the pros takes time to
learn, and being behind at the beginning
is certainly no advantage,
especially to a rookie just learning
the ropes of the NFL.
Third, the Packers have returning
starters at the receiver position in
Walter Stanley and Phillip Epps,
both considered above-average NFL
performers. In addition to that, they
have veteran backup players who
have been through the league before,
and are a little more familiar with the
Packers' system.
Sharpe recognizes the obstacles
that are in his way. So should his
disappointed fans. With his work
ethic and immense talent, Sharpe will

lineup, no matter who's in front of
him. Just give him some time. He's a
can't miss prospect.
Now if he can just get used to those
Green Bay winters. . . .
St. Peter

feel uneasy about it.
"I'm pushed to excel. I sometimes
wish another freshman was on the
team, but the other runners have
made me feel included."
The team consists of eight
sophomores and St. Peter. It's a
young team, but she feels it won't
make a difference.
Coach Larry Greene, in his first
season, was not heavily involved in
the recruiting of St. Peter because of
his recent appointment as coach, but
he has already earned her respect.
"He is great. He reminds me of my
former coach in Vermont, and he has
, helped me a lot," St. Peter said.
In her first season as a Gamecock,
she has some high expectations but
mainly wishes to improve herself and
her running. With those goals in
mind, St. Peter is shooting for the
top.

Groh says he doesn't think two easy victories have
given the Gamecocks a sense of false confidence
with the toughest opponents yet to come.
"The only false confidence, if there was any
false confidence, I think it would come from the
leadership level, and I don't see it," Groh said
Monday during the Gamecocks' weekly news confprpnrp

Touchdown Club.
"I see a very realistic approach in the leadership
level as far as where this team is and what needs to
be done." Groh said.
USC, ranked No. 14, defeated North Carolina
31-10 in the season opener and rolle over Western
Carolina 38-0 last Saturday. The Gamecocks play
East Carolina, 1-1, this Saturday.
Groh said he sees the Gamecocks' opening two
victories as more than just "tune-ups" for more
powerful opponents such as Florida State and
Clemson.
"I don't see any of them as being tune-ups. I see
them as all being very challenging, very tense and
very important," Groh said.
"Last week was an opportunity for us to accumulate
some skills and some production to be
able to do certain things with our offense that we'll
need to do to have a pleasing season," Groh said.
"I feel like it's been a significant challenge,"
said Groh, who is entering his first season USC.
"Obviously the first game was one I didn't know
what to expect. I had never been in a game circumstance
with this offense and these players. We
really were kind of going into an unknown," he
said.
"I was pleased with the way we responded to
that. Last Saturday, I had a better feel for the
overall offense, but obviously the unknown circumstance
then would be the response of the new

Dingle and Gerald Williams.
They stepped in to fill the gaps left by the injured
Keith Bing and Harold Green. Bing and Green probably
will play in Saturday's home contest againt
East Carolina, Groh said.
Groh said he was pleased with the performance
of the young backs.
Williams was the game's leading rusher with 108
yards. Dingle scored two touchdowns, gaining 85
yards rushing and another 57 receiving He suffered
a bruised right shin in the third quarter but is expected
to play Saturday.

substantial lead.
"We had a team that, obviously by the score and
circumstances, was really reeling a little bit at 17-0
going into halftime and we were going to get the
ball back," Groh said. "I think we developed a
kind of fighting heart that an offensive team
should have, that's when you have to kind of reach
out and tear out the heart of the opponent's
defense."
Groh describes USC as "a team of ambition,
and they've got some lofty objectives in front of
them to achieve those things."
One of those objectives is to continue to improve
against East Carolina, which dropped a 27-16 decision
to Virginia Tech last Saturday.
"They've got a relatively young defense, at the
same time they have some outstanding performers
on it," Groh said.
He said defensive tackle Mike Applewhite, at 6
foot 3 inches and 255 pounds, will be a challenge
during the game. And Groh said defensive end Ernie
Logan can make "a superman play" and
disrupt the offense.
"Those are the kind of guys we always try to
identify in our planning: Who's the guy or guys on
the opponent defense capable of changing the football
game," Groh said. "I think those are two guys
in particular tht will be very important for us to
control."
Groh said East Carolina, which won its season
opener against Tennessee Tech 52-13, does not
have "a pure run-and-shoot offense."
"During the course of the game they'll go to an
option attack for a while, then they'll kind of do a
run-and-shoot attack, they'll get a power football
approach," he said.
Groh said there are some similarities between
East Carolina and USC.
"I see the same basic framework. They're a
four-down team, multiple coverage team. You're
not going to get the same thing two games, two
plays in a row," he said.
