Wednesday, 15-3, 15-4, 15-7, the Lady Gamecock
volleyball team sponsors its home opener today
with USC's own Carolina Classic Tournament,
featuring five teams in round-robin play.
The Lady Gamecocks open the tournament at 1
p.m. against Western Carolina in the Soloman
Blatt P.E. Center, followed by a 3 p.m. match between
William and Mary and West Virginia. USC
returns to the court at 6 p.m. against North
Carolina State, and William and Mary finish the
first day of action against Western Carolina at 8
p.m.
Carolina takes on William and Mary 11 a.m.
Saturday and plays West Virginia at 4 p.m. N.C.
State will play West Virginia at 11 a.m. and
Western Carolina at 4 p.m.
Head coach Bonnie Kenny said her team's blend
of experience and talented youth will help the
squad better the past season's disappointing 15-15
record.
"We finally have some senior leadership and
depth to the squad, and that's really going to make
the difference for us this season," Kenny said.
"We still have people battling for positions and we
had a real good preseason, so we're excited about
the posibilities."
Six starters return from last year's squad, including
All-America candidate Diane Denton.
Denton, a senior, ranked fourth in the nation with
525 digs in 1987, while also setting a school record
