Racism d debators < By JONATHON LOBER Staff writer Racism in the United States has decreased over time and will continue to, but it still presents a problem today, members of a student group said Wednesday night. The Great Commision Christian Fellowship met Wednesday to discuss racism on campus and in general. The group of about 12 students first tried to define racism and its causes. Then they discussed whether or not all people are racist to some degree. "Racism is basing decisions about people because of their color," Landra Copes, architect and Columbia resident said. Other members of the group tried to refine this definition. English sophomore James Washick said someone could be considered racist when he commits a Salaries Continued Campuses and Continuing Education department, has grown a great deal in the past three to four years. This growth, when coupled with budget cuts, has made resources scarce and pay-raises more difficult to give, he said. He said that three years ago, the department was able to give a payraise to graduate assistants and assistant professors who taught evening classes. If a person does not commit violence or discriminate, but harbors ill will toward people of other races then the person would be prejudiced, not racist, he said. Hidden racism is just as bad as overt racism but more subtle, Washick said. "I think it can be based on insecurity or on pride," said George Miller, a computer engineering junior. The group also said racial stereotypes can be unrealistic. One member mentioned Jimmy "the Greek" Snyder's comment that blacks are physically superior, because they were bred that way by slave owners, a comment which led to his dismissal from CBS-TV. from page 1 "We teach more than 600 courses a year in the evening, and this means remedying the problem will require a huge amount of money," he said. The pay adjustments made three years ago had a price tag of about $30,000, said Sally Boyd, the assistant dean of Lifelong Learning Offices. "If we had the resources, I would like to pay evening professors twice as much as we pay them now, but in order to do that we are talking hundreds of thousands of dollars," Boyd said.
