Midfielders to
help offense
By CHRIS SILVESTRI
Staff writer
Argentina has Diego Maradona,
Brazil had Pele and since 1984, the
USC soccer team had Doug
Allison, the leading scorer in
Gamecock history with 63 goals in
four years.
But now Allison and forwards
Scott Cook and Ami Arnthorsson
are gone, and the Gamecock front
line is in dire need of scoring
power.
The Gamecocks finished 16-2-3
last season and went to the NCAA
tournament.
Much of this season's offensive
burden will fall on the shoulders of
senior Grenville Pope. Soccer
coach Mark Berson expects the
5-foot-10-inch, 160-pound forward/midfielder
from Ashwater,
England, to help fill the gap left by

graduation. Expectations are high
because Pope had a "very good
pre-season," Berson said.
Pope started every game last
season, coming up with two goals
and five assists.
The development of this year's
offense has been a slow process,
Berson said, but Pope thinks the
team is coming together well.
Bill McMullan was voted team
captain. Berson moved him to
center midfield to bring some experienced
leadership onto the field.
The midfielders will overlap on offense
more often this year, he said,
and some of their scoring problems
have been cured by the maturation
of many young, inexperienced
players.
"We lost many important
players last season," said Pope.
"However, we got the new guys
together, and we started a new
identity. It was a little shaky at first
but everything has come together
quite well."

from Fairfax, Va., has taken on an
important leadership role ? along
with Pope. McMullen has been a
consistent force on the Gamecock
defense for three seasons. But this
year, in order to help spark the offense,
he will play midfield. With
his move, the Gamecocks should be
strong at midfield and should be
able to control the flow of play.
"we nave a lot 01 aepm ai rniafield,"
said McMullen. "Many
people can come in off the bench,
and it won't hurt us at all."
The development of this team,
however, has been anything but
easy, Berson said. The squad lost
seven days of their pre-season
because school started early this
year, and 50 percent of the players
are freshmen newcomers. "It has
been an uphill battle," he said.
"We lost a great deal of our scoring
punch," Berson said. "We
have a completely new attack this
year."
The Gamecocks, however, have
been able to score nine goals in
three pre-season games, Pope said.

Arndt starting goalie
By CHRIS SILVESTRI
Staff writer
If there is one player on a soccer field who has the
ability to carry a team, it is the goalie. And with Charles
Arndt tending the net for USC, the Gamecocks are flying
high.
Arndt, one of the nation's premier goalies, is a strong
contender for All-America honors this season. The
6-foot-l-inch senior from Silver Spring, Md, possesses
great quickness.
Arndt is expected to carry this year's team because of
its youth and inexperience. But a goalie who last season
started every game, recorded seven shutouts and allowed
only 9 points in 20 games may be able to carry that
burden. Arndt played 1,662 minutes last year and should
provide the Gamecocks with some stability.
Junior Chris Foley also provided the Gamecocks with
security in goal last season. Foley, who did not allow a

single goal in eight games last season, will be red-shirted
this year. This move places freshman Spencer Leuders,
of Richardson, Texas, in the back-up role.
Arndt, however, won't be alone in his task of keeping
the ball out of the net. The core of last season's defense
will return for the Gamecocks. They're expected to keep
the team going while the inexperienced offense matures.
"We know what to expect so the pressure is on the
defense as a whole," Arndt said.
Sophomores Mike Gosselin, Arnar Jonsson and Tommy
Loeber, junior Scott Henderson and senior David
Golan return to help defensively.
"We have an experienced defensive core returning,
and they will need to play solid, fundamental defense in
order for us to stay in games," said head coach Mark
Berson.
Already considered a candidate for post-season
honors, Arndt doesn't seem to be bothered by the hype.
He said the team's goals are his only goals.
"We have a really tough schedule, and the more I
keep the ball out of the net the better," Arndt said.
