Rape Campus By RITA COSBY Staff writer College women are two to thre< times more apt to become victims o rape than other women, said Danm Baker, Law Enforcement and Safet; assistant vice president. I've heard of cases involving i 90-year-old woman all the way dowi to a six-month-old child," Bakei said. The official number of rape: reported on the USC campus i; technically very low. We believe that at least two tc three happen for every one reportec and that 25 percent of all colleg* coeds have been rape victims or vie tims of attempted rape," Baker said "College students, in particular, must have their guard up. The cam pus is a deceptively safe place for the victims," said Michael Clay Smith, a criminlolgist at the University ol Southern Mississsippi. "Each year there are perhaps as many as 10,000 rapes on college campuses. About half of those are perpetuated by intruders who picked campuses as a good place to come, because there are a lot of potential targets and a lot of attractive young women," Smith said. In the 1984 Burkhardt Study, where 200 male undergraduates were surveyed, more than 15 percent had forced a woman to have sex againsi her will. "More than half the rapists are under 25, with three out of five married, leading normal sex lives. They come from all ethnic groups and all walks of life," Baker said. Baker and other experts agree thai rape is often a seasonal offense. There is a rise of attacks during the late spring and summer periods. Types of rapists Also, 50 to 55 percent of all rapes occur with someone the victim knows; ranging from a boyfriend/husband to someone they may have only spoken to for five seconds at a irienaiy garnering. This is also known as the acquain1 tance/date rapist. "He is very insecure and compensates this feeling 1 of inadequacy through power plays. ? He carries the myth that women like to be raped and may even ask him for a date after the rape," he said. The next category is the anger t rapist. These rapes are usually unplanned and often done in retalia> tion for a severe argument or job I loss. They often beat their victim and ; use abusive language. The sadistic rapist is the least frequent, but often gets the most . coverage. He seeks revenge in the punishments of another person. ' "He is very violent and deliberate1 ly plans assaults. He's usually a : psychopathic and is foremost on the minds of USC Police." 1 The sadistic rapist often murders his victims. "Most of the time the : general rape victim gets off free. ' Fewer than five percent of rapes result in serious injuries or death," ' he said. i Many experts blame rape on society. "We've created these myths about male-female relationships and ! behavior. Even in the greek system ' we call sororities, girls and fraternities, men." "We expect that the man must go ' out and conquer. The message sent is that the guy has to score on the first night," Baker said. Rape a violent crime Women also do not ask to be raped. "Rape is sex without a vote. !
