Once again, USC plays a fornidable
schedule. The Gamecocks

Mark Berson
is most effective in the final third of
the field. He suffered a broken arm
in the spring but should be fully
recovered and should improve on his
nine point total in 1987.
Sophomore Clark Brisson will contend
for a starting role up front.
Brisson has the ability to take players
on effectively in attack and create
scoring chances. The North Carolina
High School Player of the Year in
1986, Brisson fired 32 shots on goal
and is the leading scorer among
returning forwards.
Two excellent recruiting years may
help to fill the voids left by graduation.
Jeff Love, the leading scorer
among returnees could see action at
forward or at midfiled.

A main concern for the
Gamecocks in 1987 could be the most
hotly contested areas for playing time
in '88. The midfield may hold the key
to overall team success and will be
asked to contribute more offensively.

Coombs was on the way to a brilliant
'87 season until suffering an injury in
the seventh game of the year. An 18
match starter in 1986, he has the
ability to break open games with his
ballhandling ability and
explosiveness.
Mark Root returns to the
Gamecocks and played on the 1985
South Region Championship team.
Root is an excellent playmaking midfielder
with a knack for making good
decisions in the open field. Along
with Root, Craig Hartman will contend
for a starting role as will senior
Pat Walsh.
After giving up only nine goals last
year, the defense returns largely in
tact. The loss of All-America Marty
Baltzegar leaves some big shoes to fill
at the stopper position. Mike
Gosselin returns at sweeper after a
fine freshman season that saw him
recognized as one of Soccer
America's top eleven freshman in the
USA. A rugged tackier, Gosselin
started all 21 games in 1987 as did
Billy McMullan. McMullan possesses
quick feet and is the leading scorer
among returning defenders. Tommy
Loeber returns after missing all of
last season due to injury. Scott
Henderson is a two year starter and is
expected to be a defensive anchor in
1988.

In goal, USC returns perhaps the
nations' finest in senior Charles Arndt.
Arndt, a legitimate Goalkeeper of
the Year candidate, allowed nine
goals in 1,662 minutes of action, or
one goal every 185 minutes. Arndt
owns a 0.67 goals against average in
3,282 minutes for his career.
Last season, Arndt and junior
Chris Foley combined for 14
shutouts. Foley owns an amazing
0.18 goals against average during his
career.
