The USC football team is going to be good this he;
season. But how good? ]
That question has served only to spawn more thi
questions this summer. Some specialty magazines liki
have the Gamecocks rated as high as No. 6 in their jnj
pre-season polls. Others have ignored the team that pla
went 8-4 in 1987, the second-highest win total in I
school history. loo
Reporters came to the Gamecocks' Media Day Mi
luncheon armed with those questions. They came for
away with answers, though not necessarily the ones wh
they were looking for. sai<
What about Ryan Bethea? The athletic depart- \

"There's always a lot of pressure," senior offence
lineman Paul Shivers said. "I think everyone
;pects a lot more (this season)."
"We've, always got to do good, even when we're
ted low," senior punter Rodney Price said.
The USC football schedule looks like it will be
ft enough early for the Gamecocks to answer all
e questions in time. Five straight home games
>en the season, including fodder such as Aplachian
State, East Carolina and Western
irolina.
One would hope things would be settled by Oct.
when the Gamecocks take on Georgia. They had
tter be the right answers if they hope to live up to
me of the loftier pre-season predictions.
For now, everyone will just have to hash over the
1 questions or think up new ones. Either way,
:y aren't going to be answered until at least Sept.
when USC opens against North Carolina.
