Sixteen fraternities will begin Rush Week Aug. 28, and
three will rush independently and hold orientations Sept.
7.
Rush week is a week long orientation where students
may visit fraternities and speak with members and decide
if they wish to pledge any of the organizations.
The first two fraternities at USC were established in
1852, and since then 17 additional chapters have been
formed.
Carolina's greek system offers each student a chance to
develop his potential in all areas, said Luke Byars, Fraternity
Council President.
Fraternity members participate in many activities. Dro
grams, sports events and service projects.
"Going greek is probably the easiest way to enrich the
scope of your college experience offering such lifelong
benefits as lifelong friendship, alumni relations, athletic
opportunities, civic and philanthropic outreach to the
disadvantaged, academic excellence, and social aspects,"
said Rich Veon, Fraternity Council Second Vice President/NIC
Concerns.
"Just remember every fraternity at USC is different;
each one with something unique to offer its members.
Each fraternity has its own character and personality,"
said Byars.
Members of USC's greek culture have definate opinions
about the fraternity life at Carolina.
The "various advantages offered by fraternal organizations
also give rise to certain skills that can be found only
in a fraternity man ? a knowledge of governmental/committee
procedures; the attainment of leadership qualities
early in life; the ability to become friends with anyone,
anyone in the world, and the most important, the perfection
of the art of communication, something sincerely
lacking in today's world," said Veon in a letter to 1988
rushees.
Sororities
Sororities have been a part of USC campus life for the
past sixty years.
Members of USC's 13 national chapters participate in
many activities, programs and service projects.

The Greek system has it all, said Anne Macon, Sorority
Council President. Members range from 4.0 grade points
students to top campus leaders, and they participate in
things from sponsoring philanthropy projects and raising
money for community charities to sponsoring activities
for the entire Carolina student body.
"The sorority system has even more to offer ? friendships
lasting a lifetime, the opportunity to achieve
scholastic excellence and the development of leadership
skills," Macon said in a letter addressing 1988 rushees.
Nine of the 13 sororities participate in Rush Week,
August 21 to 29. Four rush independently throughout the
year and will have an orientation Sept. 7.
GPR requirements for interested freshmen are between
2.0 and 3.0, depending on the sorority. Upperclassmen
and transfer students need between a 2.0 and 2.5
minimum.
Sorority activities include philanthropies where each
chapter volunteer work or contribute monetary donations
to national and community charities.
