a shy, withdrawn person browsing
through card catalogues and keeping

declining enrollment in library
schools nationwide in the 1970's.
But increasing job opportunities
are overcoming that sterotypical image,
causing more students to
become librarians, according to an
associate professor of library science
at USC.
There has been a 130 percent increase
in enrollment in USC's College
of Library and Information
x Science scince 1982. The increase
IMH M reflects a national trend, said Dr.
Charles Curran.
"We've left the Agricultural Age
and the Industrial Age. Most of us
J are no longer growing things and
J making things for a living," he said.
M "We are creating and processing
information, and information skills
are going to be the kinds of survival
V skills for the future."
In the case of USC, Curran said,
increasing enrollment can be traced
to a combination of factors.
First is the growing need for information
specialists in public libraries,
academic settings and the business
world, he said. Then there is USC's
aggressive "distance" education program,
which makes courses easily
harmacy major available statewide through
telecommunications.

chances
available in the public sector because
more federal dollars are being
pumped into public-service agencies,
and libraries fall into that category.
There are also increased opportunities
in the areas of publishing,
computer science, office manage
ment and communications for library
school graduates, he said.
The skills being learned by today's
students have adapted to a changing
world, Curran said.
In the near future, 60 percent of |
Americans will make their living by
either producing, processing or communication
information.
In principle, the librarian of the M
future will have the same duties as c5^
the librarian of the past: helping people
get to the information they need.
That's a function which will never
change, he said.
"Even when the entire Vatican
Library is reducible to a microdot, or
all of the Library of Congress is A
available just by using a remote control
retrieval device, there still will V
need to be somebody who will make ^
some sense out of the mass of
information."
Not even the old-fashioned image
of the librarian can hold back the
skilled information specialist, Curran
said.
"The stereotypical view will probably
stay forever, but sooner or
later we will overcome that to the extent
that people will know what we
do and what we can do for them."
