produce the film, The Golden Age of the Gangster, to air nationally this

From staff reports
Eight USC students helped produce The Goldet
Age of the Gangster this summer, a film that wil
air nationally this fall.
Working with actor Patrick O'Neal and pro
ducer Lou Reda, students moved props, set lights
directed traffic ? even made sure O'Neal was ai
the proper shooting site.
"They were part of everything we had to do tc
shoot the show," Reda said. He also produced Tht
Blue and Gray miniseries.
The gangster film will focus on the years wher
notorious eanastprs curh as Rahv Fapp M<?lcr*n anr
A1 Capone captured the imagination of th<
American public. About one-fourth of the movir
footage is from USC's Movietonews collection.
Students working on the project included media
arts majors Scott Allen, Carey Ballentine, Sylvia
Barnett, Lucia Davis, Lisa Dyar, Don McAllistei
and Lisa Bennet Meuller and journalism majoi
Rita Cosby.
"When students get a chance to make a film,
you can hardly hold them back," Reg Brasington,
media arts department chairman, said.
Davis, a graduate student from Spartanburg,
worked every day the crew filmed in Columbia,
When an editor had to return to New York, Davis
helped supervise the script? identifying which
takes were good, which camera angles were used
and other bits of information that will be used
when the film is edited.
The filmmakers were so impressed with her work
that they asked her to come to New York for three
weeks as an assistant editor.
"I've never worked this closely on a big production
before," Davis says. "I've worked on some
smaller, private projects, but I've never been able
to get close to the top and see how it works."
The students learned that movie production is
not glamorous. Besides having to contend with the
heat, they encountered various other problems.
One morning Davis was responsible for getting
O'Neal on location and was told to take Exit 30 off
Interstate 77. The two became so engrossed in conversation,
though, they ended up at Exit 34. After
turning around, they found there was no Exit 30.
O'Neal was good-humored about the incident.
In fact, all the students agree that the entire crew
was friendly and helpful, particularly in sharing
advice about the filmmaking trade.

"These fellows have been in the business for a
long time," Reda said, "and so working with them
for one day, two days, five days is like going to
school for a long time."
It was Reda's idea to use USC students. "I
didn't want to feel like I was coming here just to
pull something from the school without giving
them something back," he said.

Reda intends to use USC's Movietonews collection
in several TV productions, including one on
the golden age of aviation and one on Hollywood
during the war years.
He plans to use students in these productions,
too. "Any time we do a production down here,"
he said, "we'll definitely use them."
