USC students need to escape
apathy and make some changes
i
I
; Student apathy is no new thing to most college campuses;
sometimes it seems that apathy was invented at USC.
Students at Carolina have traditionally shown a lack of interest
in anything significantly affecting them. But if ever there
was a time for change, that time is rapidly approaching this fall.
; Most students at USC are at least 18 years old. This gives
these students the right and responsibility to take an interest in

issues. Yet only a small percentage of USC students are
< Registered voters, let alone politically active.
; Twenty years ago, college campuses were political
;"hotspots;" students were among the most outspoken of the
ivoting public. And the student voice was not only loud, but also
insightful. Students, many of them at the forefront of the Sixties
activism, brought the country's attention to many issues that
may have otherwise gone unnoticed by the general public.
! Today, there are probably some students who couldn't name
the Republican and Democratic presidential contenders, their
state governor, their Congressman, or their mayor. Yet most
students are extremely outspoken about our political system,
: / with the majority of outspoken students criticizing existing
policy.
L "Hypocritical" is too nice a term for students that complain
about the political system but make no move to change it. If college
campuses could unite a voting block, students would have a
ttemendous amount of influence.
When an issue such as "full-formula funding" or "drinking
4ge" is a concern of a student, that student has a responsibility
to exercise his or her political rights and vote for candidates who
have the same opinion.
Politicians probably believe that a student's "bark" is worse
than their "bite;" and after seeing the failure of Student
Government attempts at a postcard campaign, who could blame
them? USC students have a reputation of complaining about
situations but doing nothing to correct them.
' The public graces students with almost constant attention,
and USC students need to take advantage of this. We need to
voice our concerns and pressure legislators to understand student
needs, electing officials who will fight for students rather
than against them.

Students, joii
I'm not going to mince words. I think there are
some people reading this issue who should consider
joining the staff of The Gamecock but won't
because they're too lazy.
I know, because I was kind of lazy myself my
first year at USC. I should have joined my
freshman year and didn't. Looking back, I can only
figure I was lazy.
i ne incoming and returning students who should
consider joining The Gamecock staff are:
journalism students, no matter what the sequence
of study,
and non-journalism students who will need to learn
how to gather information and how to write (which
means that any student at USC should consider
giving The Gamecock a try).
First of all, non-journalism students are pro
bably saying "What will The Gamecock offer
me?"
Business, computer science and engineering
students will have to take English 101 just as
anyone else will, and they may not like to write.
Joining The Gamecock staff and writing a number
of stories and getting them printed is probably the
best way to become confident about your writing,
because vye'll show you how to write if you can't
and improve your writing if you can.
There's also a number of intangibles, such as
meeting people who will probably become your
best friends; and there's the occasional unofficial
party as well. The Gamecock staff has also been in
the past a place where all the issues of the day have

The Presidential election is coming this fall, and
political awareness in this country will be peaking.
How much do you know about today's political
scene? Here is a political I.Q. test, based on the
collegiate 100 point system. Each question is worth
5 points - a score of 90 or higher is an A, 80-89 a B,
and so forth. Test your knowledge, and for your
own benefit, grade yourself honestly.

on the door of their bedroom, the facade of their

The university was created for the meeting of
minds - where issues and ideas could be discussed
freely and candidly, and where people would be as
equal as they care to be. Hopefully, you will come
to share your ideas and learn new ones in your
years at USC.

Journalism students. You have no excuse not to
come up to The Gamecock. If you don't, you'll be
considered lazy bums by anyone you go to for a job
interview. I'm not kidding.
News-ed student^, don't assume that you will be
working on The Carolina Reporter and that's the
college paper you'll put on your resume. I've been
to a number of interviews and the editors and personnel
directors who come to the journalism school
to hire staff members and interns know The
Gamecock by name. Even the guy from the Wall
Street Journal.
Advertising students can come and work in the
newsroom if they like. They can also work in the
advertising department and get practical experience
selling ads and dealing with clients.

Public relations students, hey, you can either
write for The Gamecock or for University Relations.
We're more fun.
Broadcasting students, even vou euvs need to
know how write, and The Gamecock is the best
place for it.
Magazine students, if you want to learn to design
magazines, you can work for Portfolio Magazine,
but it only comes out four times a year. If you
think you need to learn to write on a more frequent
deadline than twice a semester, the only place to do
it is The Gamecock.
I didn't come up to The Gamecock my first year,
and it is my biggest regret in my four years here at
USC. I heard rumors about people I probably
would have wanted to know a lot better, people
who graduated before I got a chance to meet and
work with them, teachers who died or left before I
had a chance to meet them.
And I didn't do it because I was lazy. There is
too much to your advantage here for you not to
join. There's no reason for you not to join
immediately.
There's an advertisement somewhere in this
paper, listing times for meetings The Gamecock
will have the week before our first paper. Check
them out and check us out.
Editor's note: Stephen Guilfoyle, apart from being
a person who was very lazy his first year at
school, is the editor in chief of The Gamecock for
the fall semester.

Granted, this is basically a test of name recognition.
No test can truly gauge one's knowledge in
this area. However, you can definitely be proud of
yourself if you did well. On the other hand, a poor
grade should be incentive to learn more about today's
political environment.
