After successful fall and spring seasons with
^two tournament wins, the men's golf team tees
pMlf in the NCAA playoffs today at the North
Ranch Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
The team received a bid to the NCAA playoffs
in 1984, but this is the team's first bid under the
direction of third-year Coach Steve Liebler.
The team will compete against 32 other teams
in a 72-hole shootout in the four-round, four-day
tournament. At the end of the second day of play,
the 20 teams with the lowest scores will be selected
for round two on Thursday. After the third day
of competition, the 15 teams with the lowest
scores will be selected for play in the final round
on Saturday. Liebler said.
I "I think we have an excellent chance to finish
in the top 15 in the country," Liebler said.
"We've had an excellent year so far."
The team won the Wolfpack Invitational Tournament
at the Lochmere Country CLub in Cary,
^N.C. The Gamecocks finished 19 strokes ahead of

Rick Williams took individual honors with a
course-tying total of 134. The team also won the

the Turtle Point Golf Club on Kiawah Island.
Memphis State took first place.
The Gamecocks were 16 strokes behind the
Tigers going into the third day of play but fell
three strokes short with their 12-under-par rally.
The first and second place finishes by Memphis
State and USC ended a 10-year domination of
Metro golf by Florida State, a perennial
powerhouse.
Liebler said the individual play by each member
made the team a success.
"I don't have any superstars on my team, all of
the players have contributed to our success."
Five members of the team received honors as a
result of their regular-season performances.
