Call it "basketbrawl." Or call it
the "marathon game." (
whatever name is attached to it,
USC's loss to Louisville this past I
Saturday will remain a game the <
Gamecocks would probably rather
forget. I
Ironically, some players also 1
fought during a Georgetown- I
Pittsburgh game played that same
day. I
But the Gamecocks brawl with the 1
Cardinals was just as serious.
By the time the smoke had cleared,
senior center Darryl Martin and <
point guard Terry Gould had been I
ejected from the game on the <
Gamecocks' side. Because three
technicals were assessed on the team, !
USC head coach George Felton was i
bound by NCAA rules to leave the I
arena also.
To make matters worse, an irate
] USC law student was arrested after
he knocked a Louisville player on the
head during the commotion.
^ On the Cardinals' side, Herbert
^Crook and LaBradford Smith were
also thrown out of the game for
fighting.
Bob Olah, Herman Ramsey and
Ben Dunn, the game's officials,
allowed too much physical play on
both sides. In such a prcssurc-packcd
1 situation, tempers were bound to
, flare.

Basketball players should be used

the opposition and sometimes beat

NBC basketball commentator A1

during Sunday's game between
Temple and North Carolina.
In reference to the fights on Saturday,
McGuire said he is afraid the
brawls will become more vicious until

To prevent a tragedy, McGuire
said the NCAA should make players
neligible for the next two games each
time they arc ejected for fighting.
That would make the players think

The Lady Gamecocks clinched the
No. 1 seed in the Metro Conference
tournament with a 96-86 win over
Florida State Monday at Frank
McGuire Arena.
"We have one more Metro game,
Virginia Tech, but regardless of that
outcome .... We will get a bye in
the first round," l.ady Gamecock
head coach Nancy Wilson said.
The game was also the last home
appearance for USC's five seniors,
Monica William*; Dawn Paah I or
raine Frazicr and twins Laura and
Peggy Glass. As a gesture of thanks,
Wilson played the seniors as her starting
five.
"It's great to have a victory for
our seniors," Wilson said.
Florida State didn't let those
seniors celebrate too early, however.
The Lady Seminolcs gave USC a
scarc in the first half by making a
15-1 run and surging ahead, 33-24.
But the Lady Gamecocks took
control in the second half to seal the
win.
The USC seniors weren't the only
ones with a reason to celebrate. Martha
Parker, whose birthday was
Tuesday, celebrated her 21st birthday
one day early by scoring 25 points.
Sophomore center Schonna Banner
hit 22.
"It's nice to be hot again," Wilson

said. "It's nice to have that kind of
scoring again."
Wilson said she was especially
pleased for the team to get a win in
the Metro after losing two straight
conference eames to Southern
Mississippi and Memphis State on
the road.
Laura Glass said Wilson didn't tell
the seniors they would be the starting
five Monday.
"That was a nice surprise, a nice
way to finish out thfc season," Glass
said.
Although Wilson's squad has
already played their last home game,
they still have several road games left
on the schedule, including the Metro
Conference tournament and possibly
the NCAA tournament.
They will head to Alaska Wednesday
to prepare for this weekend's
Northern Lights Invitational
Tournament.
Williams, who plays forward for
the Lady Gamecocks, now only
needs 11 points to join the USC
women's basketball 1,000-point club.
Her teammate, junior Parker, scored
her 1,000th point earlier this season.
"I feel a little bit of sadness,
because I know I'm going to miss
playing with Martha and everybody
else, and all the coaches have been
really good to me," Williams said.
"But I've enjoyed every minute I've
been here at Carolina." ^
