The British rockers, who enjoyed phenomenal international success in 1983, suffered through a soap opera's worth of setbacks and tragedies. But the bad times came to an end this past year with the release of Hysteria, a comeback album that has eti \tr?r\ noar thn tnn r\ f f Ki o OIUJVU 11VCt 1 IIIV IV'}/ W1 lliv V.IIUI IO. And a successful tour to support that album includes a 7:30 p.m. stop today at Carolina Coliseum. Drummer Rick Allen, guitarists Steve Clark and Phil Collen, lead vocalist Joe Elliott and bassist Rick Savage formed Def Leppard in the late 1970s in Sheffield, England. At the time, New Wave was king, and heavy metal was scorned in the United Kingdom ? but all that was about to change. With a new decade came a new interest in hard rock in Europe, and Def Leppard led the way. The group's debut album, On Through the Night, sold well, and their powerful live shows enhanced their growing reputation. They had hardly made a dent in the United States, but that, too, was about to change. High V Dry, released in 1981, was the group's first collaboration with producer Robert John Lange, known for his work with rockers such as AC/DC. It sold millions of copies worldwide, including America, where songs such as the title track, "Let It Go" and "You Got Me Runnin'" received heavy airplay on rock ctotinnc O n a cinnln 1 ' Drin r?ir*' JlUllUIM. But he was seriously injured in a car crash soon afterward. Meanwhile, Elliott contracted the mumps in the midst of vocal work on the album. The members of Def Leppard began to doubt they would or could work together again. In mid-1986, they played nine "do or die" con certs in Europe with a drum kit con- ^ structed especially for Allen. The w shows were big successes that turned the group's fortunes around. The appropriately titled Hysteria was finally released this past June. The first single, "Women," went nowhere, but the second single, "Animal," hit the Top 20. Although it has not reached Pyromania's level of success, it has sold two and onehalf million copies so far and is among the Top 10 albums. The live show, which is receiving rave reviews, is performed in-theround. More than 30 tons of equipment make up the set, which includes a large, computerized drum set that allows Allen to keep the beat with his left foot and right arm. heiiow neaaoangers i esia, a group /.that emphasizes substance over style, 9 will open the show.
