The stage was set for an upset.
USC came into Wednesday's game with defending national
champion Tennessee ready to surprise the Lady
Volunteers with a win.
But an upset wasn't in the cards for the Lady
Gamecocks.
The Lady Volunteers showed Frank McGuire Arena's
spectators why Tennessee is ranked fourth in the country
by rallying trom a 1/-point halltimc uclicit to triumph
^ over the Lady Gamecocks 85-80.
Tennessee was lucky to escape from the arena with the
w>"USC
guard Martha Parker missed three crucial free
throws near the end of the game, while Tennessee shot 80
percent from the line to seal the win.

Lady Gamccocks head coach Nancy Wilson was pleased
with her team despite the loss.
"I thought our girls did a tremendous job," Wilson
said. "I was very proud of them because I felt like Tennessee
had to earn the win. I am extremely pleased with
the way the Lady Gamecocks played."
Pat Summitt, Tennessee's head coach, lauded the way
the Lady Gamecocks gave her team all they could handle.
"It was not an easy win. I think South Carolina did an
excellent job of preparing their team for our defense,"
Summitt said. "They made some impressive shots with
defensive pressure on them."
Summitt probably had one particular Lady Gamecock
in mind when she referred to impressive shots.
USC freshman Karen Middleton hit a phenomenal
seven three-point shots out of 12 attempts. She finished
the game with a team-high 25 points.

Middleton and Parker played the entire game without
getting a break. Wilson blamed herself for placing that
physical burden on Parker.
But Parker said she can't use fatigue as an excuse for
missing free throws.
"I take full responsibility for missing those," Parker
said.
Tennessee played a tough, physical defense the entire
game. They opened play in a full-court press and stayed in
a man-to-man defense.
The Lady Volunteers banged the Lady Gamecocks on
the inside, using their height advantage at each position to
out-rebound USC 44-35.
Parker put the Lady Gamecocks ahead 80-79 on a
15-foot bank shot with 1:26 left in the game.
After a timeout, Tennessee's Lisa Webb hit a free
throw, tying the game at 80.

Martha Parker was fouled on (JSC's next possession,
but missed two free throws that would have put the Lady

The Lady Volunteers almost let USC slip back into the
game as a foul sent Parker to the line again with 10 [ ^
seconds left and Tennessee ahead by three points.
But Parker couldn't shake the free throw blues. She 1 missed
the front end of a onc-and-one, allowing Tennessee
to get the ball back. | '
